BRUSH HOLDER (Application filed Jan. 1Q, 1900.)
(No Model.)
I :as cu, PnoYaLmmW wgsmucron u c NITED STATES IVILLIAM A. DRYDEN, SR., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE .PALMETTO FIBRE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BRUSH-HOLDER.
srncrricnrron forming part of Letters Patent No. 651,028, dated June 5, 1900'. Application filed January 10, 1900. Serial No. 96D. (N0 model.)
bing-Brush, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to scrubbing-brush es,
and has for its object to provide an improved I connection for applying'a handle to a scrub hing-brush so that the brush may be conveniently adjusted laterally with respect to the handle and the latter mayassume various vertical inclinations upon the brush in.
order that the latter may be accommodated for use upon floors and Walls and to facilitate the introduction of the brush into corners and beneath articles of furniture and the like. It is also designed to provide an attachment which may be applied to any ordinary form of scrubbing-brush so as to connect thereto an ordinary straight handle and without changing or altering the construction of said parts.
With these and other, objects in view the present invention consists in the'combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit orsacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a scrubbing-brush provided with the improved handle connection. Fig. 2 is a 1011- gitudinal sectional view thereof, showing the connection in a different position. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail perspective views of the individual members of the present invention.
Corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings are designated by like characters of reference.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the back'of the brush, preferably formed of wood and having any preferred shape. The bristles 2 are connected to the under side of the back by insertion in suitable perforations formed in the back or in any other desired manner. v
Extending centrally through the back 1 is an opening or perforation 3 for the reception of a bolt 4:, having its head fitting against the under side of the back and provided with suitable wings 6 or'an angular portion to prevent accidental axial movement of the bolt. The upper threaded portion of the bolt projects a suitable distance above the upper side of the back, and fitted to this end of the bolt is a metallic plate or washer 7, having a central perforation 8 for the reception of the bolt and also having a fiat under side, so as to fit firmly against the back of the brush. The central portion of this plate or washer is thickened or enlarged and provided in the upper side thereof with a rounded groove to form a dished seat or socket 9, having longitudinal corrugations or serrations' Located above the plate or washer 7 is a handle-socket 10, which is open at its outer or rear end, so as to receive a suitable handle 10 and projecting at the forward end of the socket is a laterally-enlarged foot 11, which is bowed downwardly and has its outer and under convex side provided with longitudinal corrugations or serrations, which are disposed transversely of the socket. This foot is provided with a central opening or perforation 13 for the reception of the upper end of the bolt or stem 4, so that the convex under side of the foot 11 may be received within the seat or socket of the plate or washer 7 Fitted to the outer extremity of the bolt and bearing upon the upper side of the foot 11 is a suitable thumb-Hutu, whereby the handle-socket may be secured to the plate or washer 7 and both parts firmly clamped against the upper side of the back of the brush. By loosening the thumb-nut 14 the foot of the handle-socket may be adjusted within the dished seat of the plate or Washer '7, so as to vary the vertical inclination of the handle, and the foot 11 is provided with the elongated opening 13, so as to permit of the rocking movement of the foot. In Fig. 1 of the drawings the handle-socket 10 is located transversely of the brush, and to adjust the handle-socket longitudinally thereof, as shown in Fig. 2, the
thumb-nut 14 is loosened, so that the socket and the plate or washer 7 may be turned concentrically upon the bolt 4, as will be understood.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that no change or alteration in the brush is required for the application of the present handle connection, as it merely requires the formation of an opening through the back 1 for the reception of the bolt or stem 4.
Although the present device has been shown and described as applied to a scrubbing-brush, yet it will be understood that it is not limited to such an application, as it may be used for mops, window-cleaning devices, sandpaper-blocks for finishing floors, and other such devices or tools wherein it is desirable that with that of the handle member, and a bolt carried by the tool-head, extending through the registering openings of the tool and handle members, and engaged by a clampingnut which bears upon and secures the handle member in its adjusted positions with relation to the head member, the handle and head members being revolubly movable, relatively to the tool-head, around said bolt as a center.
2. An adjustable handle connection, comprising a bolt, a plate or Washer having an opening loosely receiving the bolt, and also provided in its upper face with a concaved or dished seat intersecting the opening, and having corrugations or serrations, a handle socket or ferrule, having a bowed foot provided with an elongated opening loosely receiving the bolt, the convexed side of the foot having corrugations or serrations and adj ustably fitting the concaved or dished seat of the plate or washer, and a thumb-nut carried by the bolt and bearing against the outer side of the foot.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in' the presence of two witnesses.
