UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERNERD D. DRUEN, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
Box-HooK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 687,137, dated November 19, 1901. Application 1116a $eptember a, 1901. Serial m. 74,452. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BERNERD D. DRUEN, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Box-Hooks; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the figures of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a View, partly in side elevation and partly in section, of a hook constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof partly in horizontal section; Fig. 3, a view in end elevation of one of the modified forms which the handle-piece may assume.
My invention relates to an improvement in box-hooks, the object being to produce a simple and effective hook constructed with particular reference to strength.
With this end in view my invention consists in a box-hook having certain details of construction,as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown the but-end of the hook 2 is inserted into a socket 3, formed in the downwardlyturned arm 4 of a handle-piece, which also comprises a reach 5 and two long oppositelyextending handle-arms 6 6, formed integral with the said reach, which is formed integral with the arm 4. The hook 2 is secured in place in the socket 3 of the arm 4 by means of a pin 7 or in some other equivalent manner, while the handle-arms 6 6 have a wooden grip 8 secured to them by means of two long rivets 9, the outer ends of which are headed down in washers 10, let into the surface of the said grip 8.
In the modified construction shown by Fig. 3 of the drawings the handle-arms 6 6 of the construction above described are replaced 4,5
by a single tubular handle-arm 11, which also dispenses with the use of the independently formed grip, such as: the wooden grip 8 of the construction first described. The single arm 11 is made integral with the reach 12, which in turn is made integral with the arm 13, having a socket 14 for the reception of the butt-end of the hook proper, 15.
My invention is not, of course, limited for use in the construction of box-hooks, but
may be used wherever advantageous in the construction of portable hooks.
In view of the modifications shown and described and of others which may obviously be made I'would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described, but to hold myself at liberty to make such changes as fairly fall within the spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a hook, the combination with the hook proper, of a handle-piece comprising an arm formed with a socket to receive the buttend of the hook, a reach, and a handle-arm, the said socketed arm, reach and handle-arm being formed integral with each other.
2. In a hook, the combination with the hook proper, of a handle-piece comprising an arm formed with a socket to receive the butt end of the hook,'a reach, and two oppositelyextending handle-arms, the said socketed arm, reach and handle arms being formed in tegral with each other; and a grip which is fastened to the said handle-arms.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. v
BERNERD D. DR UEN.
