UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ZACHARIAI-I L. PIERCE, OF MANITOU, ILLINOIS.
LlFTlNG-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,303, dated November 1, 1898.
Application filed October 14,1897. Renewed August 20,1898- Serial No. 689,149. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ZACHARIAH L. PIERCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manitou, in the county of Mason and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Tools; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to portable hand lifting-tools.
The object of the invention is to provide a light, simple, and convenient hand-tool with which to lift large cumbersome bodies with perfect ease and securely. It is well known how difficult it is to hold a bulky cumbersome body which has no ledges or handles which might aiford means for easy grasp, and it is in the use of my device that this is overcome and the body lifted with comfort.
In the. drawings appended, Figure l is a side view of the hand-tool. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the same with parts broken away.
A represents a handle of wood or other suitable material. A length of spring-wire of sufficient cross-section to withstand heavy strains is passed through the handle, and both extremities projecting beyond the handle are bent at right angles to the portion within the handle to forin the portions B, which are parallel with each other, the wire being again turned at right angles to the portions 13, forming the portions B, each being bent toward the other, thus forming a rectangle. Then, continuing, the wires are bent to form the coils O of one or more turns, and thence descend at D to any desired distance, diverging the while, as shown in Fig. 2, and then bent to form the upward curve E on each of the extremities, andrthe ends thereof are pointed, as at F. Upon the handle is secured a leather protector G for the hand, through which an opening H is made to permit the fingers of the hand to pass in order to grasp the handle securely.
The mode of using the tool may be understood by reference to Fig. 1, in which the broken line represents a body grasped by the tool for transportation, the point F biting into the body, whereby no slipping can take place, While the upper portion of the tool bears against the body. 7 The operator lifting at the handle has a firm hold on the object to be moved by this means, and the coils 0 permit the handle to give slightly with reference to the stationary portions D. Thus a sud= den or possibly dangerous strain upon the hand is prevented in case the operator does not realize at once the real weight of the object to be lifted. The protector G serves to .keep the knuckles from accidental contact with the body laid hold of, thus providing against injury.
The device of course may be altered in various respects without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim A hand lifting-tool provided with a handle A, a perforated hand -protector G secured thereto, a spring-wire a length of which passes through the handle, and having parallel portions B on the outside of the handle at right angles to the handle, the portions B at right angles to the portions B and parallel with the handle, coils 0 being continuations of each portion B, the depending portions D descending from the coils and forming a continuation thereof, and diverging from each other, and the upwardly-tending extremities E and the points F thereof, all arranged substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ZACHARIAH L. PIERCE. Witnesses:
J. H. BLUscH, A. KEITHLEY.
