N iTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES G. BROWNFIELD, OF TERRELL, TEXAS.
GRAPPLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of, Letters Patent No. 661,033, dated November 6, 1900. Application led June Z8, 1900. Serial No. 21,912. @lo model.)
To all wit/fm, t r11/tty concern.-
Be ir known that I, JAMES G. BEOWNEIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at rFerrell, in the county of Kaufman and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grapples; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relat-es to grapples, and more particularly to devices for handling brickthat is, for moving brick from one point to another.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production and by means of which brick may be more easily handled and with much less labor and no injury to the hands or brick.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective View illustrating the invention in use. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the invention after the bricks have been discharged, and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view.
In the drawings, l' denotes the frame of the grapple, which consists, preferably, of a metal bar bent twice upon itself to form parallel strips a, b, and c. The strips at their ends are formed with longitudinal rows of holes 2.
3 denotes levers, the lower ends of which are adjustably pivoted in the holes by pivotbolts 4 and are formed with iiat angular gripping-jaws 5. The upper ends of these levers cross each other and are pivotally connected to a grip 6 by links 7, which are pivoted in eyes 8 of a short rod 9, projecting through said grip.
lO denotes a handle.
The jaws are adjustable toward and from each other by means of pins and apertures, so that they may be set to clamp a number of bricks proportionate with the strength of the person handling them. In the accompanying drawings I have shown thev jaws set to grasp five bricks. When the bricks are arranged in a row, as shown in Fig. l, the frame of the grapple is placed over the upper edge of the bricks, with the jaws bearing against the outer side of the outermost bricks in the row. Now by grasping the grip and applying an upward draft thereto the jaws will be forced tightly against the outermost brick, thus clamping the row of bricks firmly together and permitting of their removal from one point to the other. When it is desired to discharge the bricks, the operator with his ,engaged hand presses' down on 6 and grasps the handle lO and draws upward. This causes the jaws to spread apart and permits of the discharge of the bricks. (Bricks have to first rest on pile to permit of this action.)
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation.
It will be seen that the device is extremely useful for the purpose for which it is designed and that it may be placed upon the market at a comparatively small cost.
Various Vchanges in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully .described my invent-ion, whatI is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
combination with a frame comprising a metal bar bent twice upon itself to form parallel strips, a, b c, formed at their ends with longibetween said strips and said apertures and capable of adjustment longitudinally of said frame and provided at their lower ends with clamping-jaws, a grip, and links pivotally connecting said grip to the upper ends ofsaid levers, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES G. BROWNFIELD. Witnesses:
