I No. 873,044.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 10, 1907.
Application filed August 5, 1907 Serial No. 387d??- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that HENRY HARRISON HAN- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tyler, in the county of Smith and State of Texas, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piano-Slings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to slings, and more particularly to slings for handling pianos, and has for its object to provide a sling with which pianos and other similarly shaped bodies may be easily handled, and which will be adjustable to suit diiierent conditions.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a plan view of the sling opened to receive a piano; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a piano engaged in the sling; Fig. 3 is an end view Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the sling, the piano being shown therein in dotted lines; Fig. 5 is a detail showing the arrangement for adjustment of the horizontal straps.
Referring now to the drawings, the present sling comprises parallel end straps '5 and 6 having grips 7 at their endsto act as handholds or for the reception of lifting tackle. Adjacent to their ends, these straps 5 and 6 are each provided with a pair of parallel longitudinal slots 8 resulting in spaced side portions 9 and an intermediate web 10, and engaged through each pair of these slots, there is a horizontal side strap 11, these straps being connected at their ends by buckles 12, when the sling is in use.
One ofthe straps 11 is provided with a longitudinal series of notches 13 in its lower edge, and adjacent to each end, these notches resulting in a plurality of downwardly extending tongues 14, which are arranged for engagement over the outer faces of the straps 5 and 6 at the lower portions of the webs 10, the notches 13 receiving the portions of the end straps at the lower ends of the slots 8. The end straps are thus adjustable toward and away from each other on the notched horizontal strap 11. Adjacent to the unnotched horizontal strap 11 the end straps 5 and 6 are provided with roller receiving longitudinal slots 15 through which the rollers 16 of a piano 17 are passed.
In use, the buckles 12 are unfastened and the sling is laid out flat upon the floor, after which the piano tobe handled is disposed upon the endstraps 5 and 6 between the straps 11, and the end straps are then brought upwardly over the sides of the piano to give these end straps a U shape. The horizontal straps are then buckled around the ends of the piano, after the correct adjustments have been effected, and the piano may be easily handled. It will be understood that the rollers 16 are engaged through the openings 15 to prevent the end straps from slipping off of the piano. As will be observed, the end straps are of su'liicient length to allow the grips 7 to pass around the ends of the piano when the latter is carried in a confined space.
What is claimed is:
1. In a sling of the class described, the combination with end straps disposed in parallel relation and including vertical portions and horizontal bottom portions, of horizontal straps engaged in the Vertical portions of the end straps and detachably connected at their ends, said end straps and one of the side straps being arranged for cooperation to hold the side strap against movement with respect to said end straps, and grips carried by the ends of the end straps.
2. A sling of the class described comprising end straps arranged for engagement around the sides and bottom of a piano, said end straps having roller receiving openings therein, and horizontal side straps adjustably engaged in the end straps, said side straps being detachably connected at their ends.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY HARRISON HANSON.
'Witnesses:
SAWNIE ROBERTSON, WM. H. HANsoN.
