ALFRED AYER, OF LAKE WEIR, FLORIDA.
DEVICE FOR HANDLING BQXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,844, dated August 4:, 1885.
Application filed June 16. 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED AYER, of Lake Weir, in the county of Marion and State of Florida, have invented a new and Improved 5 Device for Lifting and Handling Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Orange and lemon boxes, when filled, are
very heavy and cumbersome, and very diffiro cult to handle. and they cannot well be supplied with handles, as that would make them too expensive.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved device by means of which I 5 the boxes can be lifted and handled very easily.
The invention consists in the combination, with two side bars, of clamps pivoted to the the ends of the same, and a strap uniting the clamps.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is aperspective view of a box and of my improved device for lifting and handling it. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Two parallel side bars, A, are provided with upwardly-proj ecting arms B, having their upper ends, 13, bent toward each other, and the ends of the bars A are united by bolts 0, on each of which two hook clamps, D, are mounted between the side bars. The outer and inner ends of the hook-clamps are united by bolts E E.
011 the outer bolts clevises F are held, which are united by a strap or band G.
Curved plates J are secured on the curved parts of the clamps D, and the said plates are 40 preferably serrated or roughened.
(N0 model.)
The device is placed on the box as shown in the drawings, the bars A being at the sides of the box and the bent ends B resting on the top of the box, and thus preventing the device from dropping down too far.
By pulling upon the band or strap G the inner curved edges of the clamps D are pressed against the ends of the box, which isthus held securely and can be lifted and carried by means of the band G, the said band G being passed over the neck and a handle, D, grasped in each hand, thus causing the neck and shoulders to relievethe arms of much of the weight.
To release the box, the outer ends of the clamps D are pressed down.
When two men are to carry the box, the clevises F are removed, and each man grasps the outer bolt or rod,E,of one pair of clamps D.
I The deviceis entirely independent of the box, and can be applied and removed easily and rapidly.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with two bars, of clamps pivoted to the same at the ends, clevises on the clamps, and a band or strap uniting the clevises, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the side bars, A, having upwardly-bent arms B, having their upper ends bent toward each other, clamps pivoted to the endsof the bars, and a band or strap uniting the clamps, substantially as here in shown and described.
ALFRED AYER.
