No. 559,669. Patented May 5, 1896,
g gzveizibr ll fzfneywew u'umo WASHINGTON D c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL BRODERICK, OF LAUREL HILL, NEIV YORK.
LIFTER AND CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 559,669, dated May 5, 1896.
Application filed March 28, 1896. Serial No. 585,187. [No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL BRODERICK, of Laurel Hill, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lifters and Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide for conveniently lifting and carrying heavy bodies by hand.
A lifter and carrier embodying my invention consists of a hand-bar adapted to be carried by one or more men at each end and having a notched rack on its upper surface, a sling, the ends of which are suspended from said rack, and two hooks, through the heads of which the said sling passes and which are drawn together against the ends or sides of the body to be carried by the weight of the body itself when the latter is suspended from the sling.
The invention is more especially intended for the carrying of metal ingots, but may be adapted to the carrying of other heavy bodies.
I will first describe my invention in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings and afterward point out its novelty in claims.
Figure 1 represents a side view of my lifter and carrier having an ingot dependent from it, and Fig. 2 an end view of the same.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both the figures.
A designates a hand-bar, preferably of wood, of convenient length according to the length of the body to be lifted and of a size to be conveniently handled by one or more men at each end. On the outer edge of this hand-bar there is firmly secured a notched metal rack a. B is a sling, preferably of chain, having at each end an attached ring or link I) of a size to pass over and along the hand-bar A,
O C are hooks having in the heads of their stocks eyes 0, through which the sling B passes. These hooks may be of any form suitable for grasping the ends or sides of the body to be lifted. In the example represented they are of acute angular form corresponding substantially with the form of the ends of the ingot D.
In using the lifter the rings or links I) 1) upon the bar A are adjusted in two of the notches of the rack a, at a suitable distance apart according to the length or width of the body to be lifted, and the hooks C are placed over the ends or sides of the said body. When the hand-bar is lifted, the weight of the body engaged by the hooks brings such a tension on the sling that the latter drawing through the eyes 0 in the heads of the hooks draws the hooks toward each other and so makes them grasp the body in such manner that it may be carried by the hand-bar A wherever desired.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is- 1. A lifter and carrier comprising a handbaiya sling the ends of which consist of rings or links movable on said bar lengthwise thereof, and hooks having eyes in the heads of their stocks through which the sling passes, all in combination substantially as herein described.
2. A litter and carrier comprising a handbar on which is a notched rack, a sling the ends of which consist of rings or links adj ustable on said bar at difierent distances apart in the notches of its rack, and hooks having eyes in their stocks through which the sling passes, all in combination substantially as herein described.
