Description

s. 0. JENSEN" DEVICE FOR CARRYING BARRELS. APPLIUATION FILED NOV. 13, 1909.

3mm" has SOREN G. JENSEN, OF KINGMAN, MAINE.
DEVICE FOR CARRYING BARRELS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 24,- 1910.
Application filed November 13, 1309. Serial No. 527,948.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, Sonnn G. Jnnsnu, a citizen of Denmark, residing at Kingman, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Device for Carrying Barrels, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to tools designed for use by freight handlers, packers and others who, in the course of their duties, must manipulate barrels, kegs, long packing cases and similar containers.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple tool by means of which two persons of unequal height may work together in transferring loaded barrels from the field to a storehouse without a greater portion of the weight being borne by the shorter person.
A further object is to provide a tool having its gripping portions held spaced from the body of the barrel so that the hands of the workmen will not be lacerated from accidental contact with the barrel.
A still further object is to provide a tool which is durable, light and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above advantages and other objects. in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention embraces certain novel details of construction and.
combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification,
Figure l is a side elevation of the tool shown in applied position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the tool with parts broken away. Fig. 3 is a pcrspective view of one of the adjustable handles of the tool.
Referring to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts in the views shown, 1 designates a barrel of the usual. and well known kind.
The tool comprising the subject matter of this invention consists of a bar 2, which may be made of any desired material and of any shape, upon which the barrel 1 is supported in upright position.
Disposed upon each end of the bar 2 is a handle consisting of an arm 3 provided at its lower extremity with an angular extension 4 through which and the bar 2 clamp ing bolts 5 are passed to rigidly secure the arm in position. Formed longitudinally of the arm is a plurality of square openings 6 to engage the adjusting bolt of the grip member, as will presently appear. The grip member is preferably formed from a single blank of tubular material looped upon itself to form a substantially flat loop or shank 7 adapted to slidingly lit the outer face of the arm 8. The terminals of the loop 7 diverge from the open end of the loop and are curved outwardly to provide curved diverging prongs 8 which are provided at their extremities with suitable bearings to receive a tubular grip 9.
Engaged through a pair of the openings 6 in the arm 3 are bolts 10 each having a squared shank 11 to engage the squared opening and prevent the independent rotation of the bolt and each terminating in a threaded extremity to receive a retaining nut 12. Fitted onto the shank of each bolt in advance of the retaining nut is a washer 13 which engages the shank 7 of the gripand tightly clamps the same when the nut has been advanced to its final position. The shank 7 of the grip is thus adjustably mounted upon the arm 3 of the handle and the grip 9 may be elevated to any desired position above the arm 3 by engaging the bolts 10 in the squared openings 6 which will effect the desired elevation. It may be seen by referring to Fig. 1 that by this adjustable feature of the handles, one of the handles may be adjusted so that its grip considerably nearer the bottom edge of the barrel than the other handle so that a barrel may be transferred from the field to the warehouse by two persons of unequal height without either being forced to assume an uncomfortable position while carrying the barrel. The barrel is further held from tilting toward the shorter of the workmen while in transit to its destination so that the weight of the barrel is equally distributed between the two persons. It will further be noted that the curved prongs 8 of the grip member space the grip 9 a con siderable distance from the body of the barrel so that the fingers of the workmen will not be laceratcd from accidental contact with the sides of the barrel.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that the construction and operation of my invention will be easily understood without a more extended explanation, it being understood that various changes may be made in the form, proportion and minor details of construction With-v out sacrificing any of the advantages or departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A tool of'the class described consisting of a bar, and an adjustable handle at each end of the bar, each handle comprising an arm rigidly secured to the bar, and a shank adjustably mounted on said arm having a curved extremity terminating in a gripping portion.
2. A tool of the class described consisting of a bar, and a pair of adjustable handles extending laterally from the bar; each handle consistin of an arm and a shank ad- I D a u ustably mounted on said arm, said shank having an outwardly curved extremity terminating in a transversely disposed grip portion.
3. A tool of the class described consisting of a bar, and a pair of adjustable handles upstanding from opposite ends of the bar: each handle comprising an arm, a shank adjustably secured to the arm having outwardly curved prongs at one end, and a grip disposed between the extremities of said prongs and held thereby beyond the plane of said shank.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
