CHARLES I-I. KEEHNER, OF MONROE, WISCONSIN.
BARREL SWING OR CRANE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,648, dated May 24, 1887.
Application filed October 30, i866. Serial No. 217.587. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, t may concer/fi,.- y
Be it known that I, CHARLus H. KEEHNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monroe, in the county of Green and State of Wis` cousin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BarrelSwings or Cranes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. This invention relates to a barrel swing or crane, and it consists in the construction of a device which will be simple and compact in arrangement, efiicient in use, and easily arranged.
Theimprovement consists in the novel features hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings,in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the device in position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the de vice detached, and showing its adjustment by dotted lines; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view vof the handle to be attached to the barrel to facilitate swinging it in and out.
My device is principally designed te be used in stores, where it is desirable to utilize the space beneath the counters for storing barrels and similar packages containing merchandise, in such manner that said barrels or packages will be readily swung in and out, as occasion may require.
The device consists of the adj nsting-s'tandard composed of the two parts Aand A, which are secured together in such manner that the standard may be lengthened or shortened to accommodate it to the varying distances between the floor and counter, preferably by the coupling-sleeve a, which is internally threaded to receive the proximate ends of said ends A and A', which ends are oppositely threaded, the one being provided with a rightshand thread and the other end with a corresponding left-hand thread. These parts may be of any desired shape in cross-section, and may be solid or tubular, the latter construction being preferable, as they may be made of ordinary 5o gas-pipe, which is sufficiently strong, the sides being light in weight and economical in cost.
The opposite ends of the standard are provided with gudgeens, which are adapted to enter sockets in the plates secured to the under side of the counter and to the floor, preferably in a perpendicular line, so that the package will move in a horizontal plane. These gudgeons preferably form integral parts of thimbles a', which are screwed upon the ends ofthe standard.
The standard is provided in each end with gripsB and C. The grip C consists ofa sleeve, which may be one ot' the thimbles af, having arms c extending therefrom in a divergent direction, and having their ends bent upward, forming prongs -which are adapted to bite into the bottom of the package.
The grip B consists ot' a sleeve having a lug, b, extending from a side thereof, andthe hook b,pivoted to the lng so that it may be adj ust-ed relative to the sleeve, to accommodate itself to the bulge of the barrel and facilitate its engagement with or disengagement from the package or barrel. Either or both of thegri ps may be adjustable along the standard to regulate the distance of the package from the floor and accommodate 'them to varying sizes of packages. Ordinarily it is sufiicient if the upper grip, B, be made adjustable. If so desired, set-screws may be provided to bold the grips in an adjusted position.
Where a series of packages or barrels are pivotally supported beneath the counter, it is found to be difficult to get a hand-hold of any one of them when it is desired to swing the same outward for removing a portion of the contents. To obviate this objection I have devised ahandle, E, which consists of a single piece of wire doubled on itself and having its closed end c bent outward, and the free ends formed into hooks and adapted to be tted over the side of the package or barrel, as shown.
In practice the standard can be adjusted by means of the sleeve c in such manner that it can be readily removed from the bearingplates D, or inserted in position, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s*
l. A barrel swing or crane consisting of the following elements in combination: the stand ard made in t'wo'parts, the coupler uniting their proximate ends for lengthening and shortening said standards, and the grips 1ocated near each end of the standard, substantally as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the barrel or kindred article pivotally supported to be swung out of the way, of the herein shown and described handlo, constructed of a single Wire doubled upon itself, and having the closed end 1c bent outward and the free ends forming hooks, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
CHAS, H. KEEHNER.
