To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Cxro Haannnns, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State ofIllinois, have invented a new and Improved LiftingDevice, of which the following is a description.

My invention relates to a device for the lifting and carrying of either open or closed boxes or crates, as well as tubs, barrels, ice blocks, etc.

The general object of my invention is to provide a device comprising lift bars adapted to be rasped by two people at the front and back of the device being carried and having gripping means to engage the box, barrel, block, or other article being carried.

A more specific object of the invention is to provide a device of the indicated character readily adjustable to suit articles of dif ferent widths.

The nature of the invention and its distinguishing features and advantages will clearly appear as the description proceeds.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lifting device embodying my invention showing the same adjusted to and engaging a-box;

Figure 2 is an end view on an enlarged scale;

Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view showing a portion of one of the lift bars and of the flexible means to connect the two bars.

In carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example two lift bars 10 are provided having handles 11 at both ends of the bars.

A transverse flexible element 12 has connection with the bars at the center thereof, said element in the illustrated example being in the form of a chain. Said chain has suitable connection with the bars 10 and means is incorporated in the chain to adjust its total effective length to accord with the box A of a given width or other article to be carried. In the illustrated example a snap hook 13 is interposed in the chain and is adapted to engage in one of the links of the chain according to the width of the article to be carried.

In the form shown a rivet 15'secures the shank to the bar and in addition at the bent end a screw llo isemploye'd. 1' Thus, the grabs are "disposed at the under side of the 'bars'IO and the bill or hook proper of each grab is di-' rected downwardly and laterally inward to grip the side of the box, block, or the like, being carried.

As a practical means for securing the ends of the chain 12 the outer links thereof are passed over the bills of the grabs and onto the shanks thereof to lie adjacent the outer side of the bars 10 and a retaining'element 16 is provided on each bar at the outer surface and having its ends bent downwardly toward the shank at the grab to retain the outer link of the chain against, displacement while permitting it freedom of movement on the grab. I

At its central portion each bar 10 is formed with a member 17 projecting laterally outward as' an extension so that with the bar positioned above the article to be carried the lateral projecting exerts a leverage on the grab and effectively engages it with the article. i

I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as definedv in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim: p v

1. A lifting device comprising a pair. of elongated lift bars adapted to be disposed above an article to be carried "and to be grasped at the ends thereof, a flexible transverse connection between said bars, and transversely disposed grabs on. the bars'at the approximate center thereof. at the outer sides of the barsfor engagement with the articles to be carried.

2. A lifting device comprising a pair of elongated lift bars, rigid transversely disposed grabs carried by said bars at the urn der sides thereof and extending laterally outward beyond the bars, said grabs presenting inwardly directed terminals, and a transverse connection between said bars.
