Description

Jly 23, 1929. T. J. oTTo BATHTUB CARRIER Filed May 16'; 1928 "nii-ummm..."
ATTORNEYS.
Patented July 23, 1929.
THEODORE J. OTTO, OF OAKLAND, CALFORNIA.
BATI-ITUB Application filed May 16,
This invention relates to devices for handling bathtubs.
Bathtubs are of considerable weight and it is difficult to transport and maneuver them about in a building for installation due to both their cumbersome size and their design.
It is the principal object of the present inventionto provide a simple inexpensive desome design.
vice adapted to be used in carrying tubs enabling two men to handle a bathtub with ease and facility.
In carrying out this invention into practice l provide a structure adapted to be detachably assembled on a tub. T his structure comprises grip members arranged. on the tub with their inner ends bearing on the top of vthe tub. rlhe outer ends of the grip members project a considerable distance beyond the ends ofthe tub and are formed with handles enabling them to be grasped. Vertically adjustable hooks depend from the grip members at the ends of the tub to engage the tub so that lifting movement imparted to the handles will be transmitted to the tub.
One form which the invention may assume is exemplified in the following description and illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a bathtub with my carrying devices tted thereto.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the bathtub carriers disclosing its construction.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 indicates a bathtub of any standard design upon which a pair of carriers 11 are assembled. rl`hese carriers 1l are identical in construction and in use, one' carrier being fitted to each end of the tub. The carriers 11 enable the tub to be carried and maneuvered by two men with ease and facility.
Hitherto, it has been ditlicult to maneuver tubs about a building` when installing them due to the weight of the tub and its cumberlVith carriers embodying my invention, however, the tubs may be easily carried about for installation.
Each carrier 11 comprises a pair of longitudinal bars or grip members l2 of any suitable material and design, each having a grip 14 formed at its outer end. The inner ends of the bars 12 are pivotally connected to a transverse bar l5 at a spaced distance apart. This transverse bar 15 is of a length exceeding the width of the tub. The longitudinal CARRIER.
1928. Serial No. 278,242.
grip bars 12 are provided with a plurality of openings for connection to the bar 15, so that the bar 15 may be positioned at various points along the bars 12 to obtain greater or lesser leverage. The pivotal connection between the bars assists the men using the devices when maneuvering the tub around turns in limited space.
Contiguous to 'the grip portions ll of the bars 12 each bar is fitted with a hook 16. Each hoolr 1G is formed ofa flat band of material shaped to embrace the bar. The opposite ends of the band are complementary and hook shaped to receive a chainr 17. The hooked ends of the band are clamped together by means of a screw 18 to clamp the band on the bar.
rEhe lower ends of the chains 17 are fitted with hooks 19 which are adapted to engage the lower edge of the tub. In the type of tub 7 shown in Fig. l, the hooks engage the bottom of the surrounding apron of the tub. ln other types of tubs7 however, the hooks 19 are engaged with the overhanging lip or any proJecting portion.
To adjust the distance between the bars 12 and the hooks 19, it is only necessary to engage the hooks 16 with the links of the chain at the4 proper distance from the hooks 19 as shown in Fig. 2.
When the tub is heavier at one side than the other, the longitudinal grip members 12 are arranged on the bar 15 so that the grip member 12 contiguous to the heavy side of the tub will be closer to the heavier side than the other grip member 12 will be to the lighter side, so that the tub will be balanced with respect to the carriers 11.
To transport a tub by means of my present carriers they are assembled on a tub as shown in Fig. 1. The men carrying the tub position themselves between the bars 12 facing in the same direction Aand grasp the grips 14.-. The grips 14 project sufliciently from the ends of the tub to allow7 free movement of the legs of the men carrying the tub. It is seen when the grips 14 are grasped the bar 15 will bear on the top of the tub and the chains 17 will be placed under tension, transmitting the lifting weight to the tub.
It is obvious from the foregoing that I have provided very simple and inexpensive means enabling bathtubs to be handled with ease and facility.`
While I have shown the preferred form of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in its construction by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention as ,defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A device of the character described com-V prising a pair of carrier devices adapted to be arranged one at each end of a tub, each carrier device comprises a pair of grip members arranged longitudinally at a spaced dis tance apart, a transverse member connecting the inner ends of said grip members and adapted to bear on the top of the tub, vertically adjustable means connected to said grip members and adapted to be engaged with the end of the tub whereby elevationl of the grip members will be accompanied by elevation of the tub.
A carrier device of the character described comprising .a pair of longitudinally arranged grip members adapted to bear on a tub at their inner ends, the outer ends ot said carrier members adapted to project beyond the end of the tub, hooks secured on said carrier members contiguous to the end of the tub, chains detachably connected tok said hooks and depending therefrom, and other hooks at the lower ends of said chains adapted to engage the tub to transmit a lift thereto when the outer ends of the grip members are lifted.
3. A device of the character described comprising a pair of grip members arranged at a spaced distance apart longitudinally of a tub, a transverse member arranged adjacent the inner ends of said grip members and adapted to bear on the tub, a pivotal connection between said grip members and said transverse member, vertically adjustable hooks suspended from said grip members contiguous to the outer end of the tub and adapted to engage the tub.
4. A device of the character described comprising a pair of grip members adapted to be arranged longitudinally of a tub, a transverse member arranged at the inner ends of .said members and adapted to bear on the top of the tub, means for adjusting the transverse member longitudinally of the grip members, a detachable and pivotal connection between said grip members and said transverse member, the outer ends of said grip members projecting a distance beyond the end of the tub, hooks mounted on the grip members and adjustable longitudinally therealong, chains engaged at their upper ends with said hooks, and hooks at the lower end of said chains adapted to engage the tub.
