LIFTING DEVICE OR GRAPPLE.
Specification 'of Letters Patent.
Application filed Qctober 13, 1919. Serial No. 330,337.
and in particular with the strongest points of boxes, crates, cases and the like, and which will at the same time be readily and quickly releasable when pressure 1s released so as to avoid the necess ty of special tools, implements and the like for knocking the grapple free.
A more specific object of my invention is the provision of a grapple in which the engaging elements may be readily detached for either sharpening or for substitution or repair in the case of wear or breakage.
With these objects in view, my invention resides in the details of construction to be hereinafter referred to in connection with the accompanying drawing which latter forms a part of this specification and contains several figures, of which,
Figure 1 is a side view illustrating the practical application of one form of my invention,
Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively a top plan and side view, illustrating a slightly different form.
Referring now to these figures, my invention proposes the use of grappling or lift.
mg arms generally indicated at 10 in Fig.
1, and at 11 in Figs. 2 and 3, each of which o form has at its outer end a pan of grappling elements in the form of engaging extensions 12, the inner port ons of which are secured rigidly along opposite sides of the lifting or grappling arm as by means of bolts .13. This permits of ready detachment of the grappling elements for sharpening, repair'or substitution.
Each of thegrappling elements 12 has an outer ofi'set portion 14 as best seen in F 1g.
at each side, of an article, so the four corners, each pair of arms being connected by links 20 with a 2, provided with an angular extension 15 as seen 1 n F igs. l and 3, this extension 15 bemg dlsposed at right angles with respect to the body of the element and with respect to the lifting or grappling arm to which it is attached, and terminating in a beveled sharpened angular engaging extremity 16, proectmg substantially parallel to the lifting or grappling arm.
Thus by virtue of their oppositely offset portions, the two grappling elements of each grappling arm are designed to span the extreme corner of a rectangular object such as a box, crate or case, so that the engaging extremities 16 will seek their hold near the top of the article at its usually strengthened,
cleated corner portion.
The grappling arms 10 of Fig. 1 are designed for use where sufficient engagement can be effected at diagonally opposite corners of an article, the inner portions of these arms .10 being provided with a longitudinal vseries of openings 17 so as to provide for their adjustable connection by means of a clevis 18, with a hoisting ring 19.
Patented June 22, 1920.
On the other hand, the arms 11 of Figs. 2 and 3 are designed for double use, 2'. 6., two
as to engage ring 21, the latter of which in practice are usually connected to the lifting ring 19 of Fig. 1, by adjustable chains.
Itlis obvious that in the practical application of my invention, it is possible, in View of its particular construction toengage a rectangular article at the corners along the usually present reinforcing cleats and thus at its strongest points, and it is also obvious that the article will be grappled near to its upper surface so that the grapplin elements may be readily and easily release It is also obvious my invention proposes a grappling device which is applicable to various sizes of articles, is capable of sustaining its load equally balanced and without undue strain on anyv part and that, beyond the foregoing it is simple, strong and durable. v
I claim A grappling device for rectangular aring at opposite sides of its outer'end-the separately attached inner extensions of grappling elements of similar construction disposed in spaced apart relation, each of said grappling elements being provided with an offset intermediate its ends adj acent' the end of its grappling arm, forming an angular outer extension terminating in an angular engaging point disposed approximately parallel to the grappling arm, the inner portions 10 of said grappling arms lapping one another and having lengthwise seriesiof openings, as and for the purpose described.
