Specification of Letters Patent. 7 Patented D131. 9, 1920.
Application filed March 15, 1919; Serial No. 282,874.
' jaws, and at the same time, one Which will permit the jaw members to be inserted underneath the said object.
My invention contemplates a pair of pliers, comprising the usual pair of like members, pivotally secured together and capable of manual actuation, whereby the jaw members act in unison, and in which each jaw member is provided with a gripping surface adapted to engage the outer surface of the object to be engaged, and with a web like base member, adapted to be passed beneath the said object, so that, the said object may be firmly gripped, by compressing the handles of the pliers, and at the same time, the object engaged may be raised through leverage, Which leverage may besecured in any suitable manner, either by placing some fulcrum device beneath the pliers or by suspending the pliers from some: object above the point at which it is to be used.
The invention is more fully described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a pliers, and c Fig. 2 is a side view showing the inner side of one of the jaw members. r In the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the body portion, 2 the handle portion and 3 the jaw portion of each of two like members, which, pivoted together at 4, makeup th pliers in complete form.
plan view of my improved Inasmuch as the two members are identical, a description of one will necessarily apply to the other.
The aw portion 3 is made up of two engaging surfaces, one of which, the upright portion 6, is adapted to engage the outer surface of the object to which it is applied, and the horizontal surface 7, which lies at right angles to the upright surface, which is adapted to be passed beneath theobject to which the pliers are applied.
The jaw members are curved or concaved on their inner surfaces, so that when the jaws are closed,-or even when only partially closed, the distance between the jaw members at their outer extremities is less than the distance between the portions engaging the object to which it is applied, thus preventingthe accidental or easy slipping of the jaws from said object.
It is evident that the engaging surfaces of the jaws may,if desired. be roughened or serrated and that the configuration of the parts may be varied without departing from the spirit of myinvention, but:
What I claim is A pair of pliers made up of two like members pivotally attached to each other, each member having a handle portion, a flat perforated body portion, and a jaw portion at its forward extremity, the said jaw portions having one face thereof flat, the other face being cut away to form a relatively long thin engaging surface and a relatively long broad engaging surface, said two engaging surfaces lying at right angles toeach other, one of which surfaces is adapted for engaging the outer surface of an object while the other surface engages the undersurfa e of said object, the inner opposing faces .of said relatively long broad engaging surfaces being concaved.
In testimony whereof I afi'ix my signature.
