UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES T. SARGENT, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN IVASIIBOARD COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
WASHBOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,557, dated March 17, 1896.
A Application filed February 26,1895. Serial No. 539,733. (N0 model.)
To all whom it Wmy concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES T.SARGENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyah oga and State of Ohio, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in W'ashboards, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in the construction of washboard-protectors described and shown in Letters Patent No. 417,880, dated December 24, 1889, whereby the pivotal protector shown therein may be adapted for supporting the soap above either face of the washboard, and protecting the same, as well as the operator, as against the splashing up of water.
In general terms, the invention consists in the construction and combination substantially as hereinaftermore fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation, of a Washboard having my improvement applied thereto.
In the practice of my invention the Washboard, as regards its rubbing-face 1, side bars 2, cross-bar 3, and head-piece 4, is constructed in the usual or any suitable manner, except that the head-piece is formed on the arc of a circle, so as to permit of the reversal of the protector from side to side of the washboard. The protector 5 is pivotally connected to the washboard-frame, so as to be reversed over the head-piece by straps 6, firmly attached at one end to the ends of the protector, while the opposite ends are pivotally connected to the frame. On the inner edge of the protector is secured a board 7 in such manner as to project on both sides of the protector, and the board is preferably made of such a Width as to project on each side of the protector a distance approximately equal to the width of the protector itself.
It will be observed that the protector and one portion of the back board, when the former is adjusted to operative position above one of the faces, will form a receptacle for the soap, and when the protector is reversed to the opposite side it, in connection with another portion of the back board, will form a similar receptacle. In both cases the receptacle is above the protector, so that the latter will protect the soap from contact with the water.
WVhen the protector is in operative position above one face, the portion of the back board below the same will bear against the frame of the washboard, and thereby hold the protector in position, while the portion of the back board above the protector will serve as a support for the body of the operator.
I claim herein as my invention 1. In combination with a double-faced Washboard, a protector pivotally connected to the frame of the board, and reversible over the head-piece from position of use above one face to a corresponding position above the opposite face, and a back piece movable and reversible with the protector, and projecting at an angle on-both sides of the protector, thereby forming a soap-receptacle above the protector ineither position of the latter, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with a washboard, a protector pivotally connected to the frame of the board, a back piece on the protector projecting at an angle from the upper side of the same, and a brace or support to hold the protector and back piece in operative position, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JAMES T. SARGENT.
