UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICE.
PETER J. J OECKEN, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN WASHBOARD COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
WASHBO ARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters ?atent No. 543,738, dated July 30, 1895.
A plication filed February 26,1895. Serial No. 537,739- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PETER J. J OECKEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Washboards, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to the combination, in a double-faced washboard, of a movablebrand-board, having connected thereto a protector, the parts being arranged in such relation to each other as to provide, by an adjustment of the brand-board and protector, a soap box or receptacle above either face of the washboard, and in general terms the invention consists in the construction and combination, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a washboard having, my improvement applied thereto; and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same, the plane of section being indicated by the line 00 av, Fig. 1.
The Washboard, consisting of the head-piece 1, side bars 2, cross-bar 3, and rubbing-faces 4, is constructed in the usual or any suitable manner. The brand-board 5, which is made of such a length and width as to pass freely through the usual opening provided therefor and completely fill the same, is made adj ustable in the brand-board space, preferably by pivoting it on'truunions at its upper corners, adapted to fit in slots formed in the inner faces of the side bars adjacent to the head- To the lower edge of the brand-board is secured a board 6, projecting at an angle on both sides of the brand-board, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. This board 6 is made of such a width that when the brand-board is adjusted to one of the positions indicated in Fig. 2 it will form aprotector above the rubbing-faces,
of the Water.
The projecting portions of the board on each side of the brand-board form, in connection with the latter, a receptacle for the soap,
which is effectually protected by the board 6 0 from the splashing of the water. In order to hold the brand-board and protector in such position with relation to both rubbing-faces as to form a soap box or receptacle, grooves 7 are formed along the edges on the under side upon the upper edge of the brand-board, and
push the latter downwardly, so that the two parts of the-l0ck,,consisting of the grooves 7 and ridge, will engage.
I claim herein as my invention- 1. The combination of a double-faced Washboard, with a pivotally mounted brandboard, and a protector attached to and projecting on both sides of the brandboard, whereby it may be swung to position of use above either of the rubbing faces, and form in connection with the brandboard, a soap receptacle above the protector on either side of the board, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a double-faced washboard, with a brandboard, a protector attached 7 to and projecting on both sides of the brandboard, said brandboard being movable so as to shift the protector to a position of use above either of the rubbing faces of the board,
and form in connection with the protector a soap receptacle on either side, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
