Description

J. J. BEAM.
COVER FOR WASHTUBS. APPLICATION FILED JULY 12, 1913.
1 1 0 1 ,5m Patented June 30; 1 914.
HI HHHI HIHIHH! um um JACOB J. BEAM, OF PERTH AMBOY, NEW JERSEY.
COVER FOR WASHTUBS.
Application filed July 12, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB J. BEAM, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Perth Amboy, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for VVashtubs, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wash or laundry tubs, tanks, basins and similar vessels or receptacles, and the object thereof is to provide an improved cover for receptacles of this class and improved means for connecting said cover with said receptacles whereby the cover may be swung into different positions to facilitate the cleaning of both the receptacle and the cover, and with this and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompa nying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of companion wash tubs, provided with my improved cover construction, one of which is open; Fig. 2 a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a section on the line 38 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 a View similar to Fig. 3, but showing the cover in a different position, and, Fig. 5 a front view of a hinge which I employ and showing the same detached and partly in section.
In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown at a two wash tubs of the ordinary form supported by legs a and provided with my improved cover I) connected with the back a of the tubs by hinges c. The cover 6 consists of a back or body Z2 a front bottom flange Z2 side bottom flanges 6 a back bottom flange b and a transverse bottom rib member I) of sub stantially the same dimensions as the front flange 6 The forward and backward dimensions of the cover are greater than the corresponding dimensions of the tub to which the cover is attached, and when said cover is in the closed position, the front flange b rests on the front wall of the tub, the rib Z) on the back wall of the tub, and
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 778,630.
the side flanges b on the opposite sides of the tub. The hinges c are secured to the body or back of the cover between the rib I) and the back flange b and said hinges consist of a part 0 adapted to be secured to or in the back wall of the tub, a part 0 adapted to be secured to the cover, a double link member 0 connected with the part 0 and a single link member 0 connected with the link member 0 and with the part 0 The tub a is preferably made of porcelain, concrete, or similar material and when so made the part 0 is anchored therein in the process of making the tub, while the part 0 is secured to the cover, as shown, by means of rivets, bolts or screws d. The link member c is provided with a screw 0 adapted to be screwed into the part 0 while the link members 0 and c are connected in the usual manner by screws, bolts or pins 0 and the part 0 is provided with ears 0 between-which the link member 0 is secured by a pin, bolt or screw 0". With this form of hinge, the cover or top 6 may be raised and held in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2, or dropped backward or lowered into the position shown in dotted lines in said figure, and when in the closed position the top, or cover 7) rests on the top of the tub with the backward extension 6 with which the hinge or hinges are connected extending backwardly of the tub, and said top or cover may be raised and moved forwardly, as shown in Fig. 4., while still resting on the tub, and by means of this construction of hinge, whereby the top or cover may be supported in different positions and moved into different positions, both the tub and the top or cover and all the parts thereof including the hinge or hinges may be thoroughly cleaned at any and all times.
My invention is not limited to any particular means of securing the hinge or hinges to the back wall of the tub, and any suitable means may be substituted for the part 0 if it is desired to make the tub of fibrous or other material, and the form of the cover or top Z) may also be changed if desired, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations in the construction herein shown and described, as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
From the foregoing description it will. be seen that the hinge shown and described is a double folding hinge, and the screw 0 is not an essential element thereof, as the link member 0 may be connected with the part 0 which is adapted to be secured to the tub, in other ways.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A cover for receptacles of the class specified. the transverse dimensions of the cover being greater than the transverse dimensions of the receptacle, and said cover being connected with said receptacle by double folding hinges consisting of four parts one of which is connected with the receptacle and one with the cover, said parts Eeing connected by intervening link memers.
2. A cover for receptacles of the class described having a bottom front flange, bottom side flanges, and a transverse rib parallel with the front flange and at a distance therefrom equal to the width of the top of the receptacle, the cover being extended at the back of the receptacle and being connected therewith by double folding hinges parts of which are secured to the receptacle and parts to the extension of the cover.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 10th day of July 1913.
