Description
I 0/1. ELLIS. WASHTUB AND WASHBOARD COMBINED. APPLICATION FILED APR- 23, I9I7- 1,24%037. Paten ted Sept. 11.1917.
shown in the present case.
. WI TTE PATENT @Ff lltllil.
GEORGE T. ELLIS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
WASI-ITUB AND WASHBOARD COMBINED.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE T. EnLis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washtubs and l/Vashboards Combined; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to Wash boards, and has particular reference to Wash boards as they are associated as attachments with laundry tubs.
The object of the invention is to provide a wash board attachment for laundry tubs wherein the wash board is an element of the cover of a tub, and has a peculiar construction which renders it capable of immediate use without the necessity of removing, or reversing, the cover structure. Thus, I provide a cover frame which may be hinged to the tub at one side, which is generally the rear side or edge of the tub, and mounted within the frame is the wash board which is hinged along the front side thereof, so that when its rear end is let down into the tub the board is immediately positioned for use and when'the cover is to be removed for the convenient deposit of clothes within the tub, it is merely necessary to swing the frame upwardly without particular reference to the position of the board.
With the above objects in view, and such others as may hereinafter appear, my invention will now be fully set forth and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure l is a plan view of the tub having my invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the tub showing the board in lowered position,
Fig. 4 is a section on line 1 4: of Fig. 3 and Fig. 5 is a bottom view of the cover structure.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents the laundry tub of usual rectangular formation, a single unit being Mounted upon Specif cation of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 23, 1917. Serial No. 163,961.
the upper edges or top of the tub 1 is the frame 2, which is preferably constructed of metal, as galvanized iron. It is suitably conformed to the upper edges of the tub, and is secured thereto by means of the hinges 3, which in this case, are adapted to the rear side of the tub.
The opening in the frame 2 is fitted with the board structure 1. Said board structure 41 is constructed from suitable corrugated galvanized iron and is longitudinally backed throughout its length by means of the brace bars 5, which in the present instance are three in number. The rear ends of the brace bars 5 carry the hinges 6 which are secured to the front side of the frame 2, so that the board a may be let down below the plane of the frame. Obviously when the board is let down, the hinges 6 will be out of sight since they will be secured to the lower face of the frame 2 and also to the lower face of the board l.
Furthermore, the lower face of the board adjacent the free end thereof, is provided with a pair of legs 7 which are mounted upon the pivots 8 so that when the board is not in use the legs may be turned inwardly so as to lie flatly and wholly against the board, but when the board is to be used, they may be projected beyond the free end thereof so as to support the latter at the proper elevation from the bottom of the tub.
Passed through the sides of the frame 2, near the forward end of the board 4% are the spindles 9 of the turn buttons 10 which may be turned across the edges of the board when the latter is elevated into the plane of the frame 2 so as to lock the board in its inoperative position.
In the use of the above described device it is unnecessary to invert or reverse the cover in order to bring the board into use, it only being required to turn the turn buttons 10 out of their locking relation so as to let down the board into' inclined relation against the bottom of the tub, the legs 7 being turned outwardly to elevate the lower end of the board. Thus, while the device is a permanent cover attachment for tubs, it is likewise readily convertible into a practical and serviceable wash board.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A combination cover and wash board for laundry tubs, comprising in combination the tub, and legs pivotally secured to the with a tub, a framehinged to thetub, and a free end of the board. 10 Wash board structure pivotally mounted In testimony .Whereof, I afiix myrsignat ure within the frame. in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
5 2. A combination cover and Washboard GEORGE T. ELLIS.
for laundry tubs, comprising in combination Wi'tnees'esi' With a tub, a frame, a board hinged Within A. ELLIS, the frame to be let down toward the rear of C. THOMAS.
