JACOB ROSKAM AND RICHARD OOMS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW. YORK.
WASHING-MACHINE. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 12, 1915. Serial No. 27,636.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JACOB ROSKAM and RICHARD OOMS, subjects of the Queen of the Netherlands, and residents of Brooklyn, in the county of'Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in ashing-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention'relates to clothes washing machines, and. hasfor its object to provide apparatus of this kind which may be used in an ordinary stationary wash tub such as are now usually. found in dwelling houses, apartments and flats.
A special object-is to provide such apparatus as can be completely stored in the wash tub when not in use, thus savingstorage space which is a very important item particularly-in modern flats and apartments.
A further object is to simplify. the construction of the lining for the tub, whereby it may be readily and securely place. p
Another object is to provide improved means for detachably fastening the cover of the machine to the lining sectlons.
.Other objects will appear as the description proceeds. j
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with ing drawings, specification, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end of the description. r In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference'characters are used to deslgnate corresponding parts throughout the tively attached thereto,
several views Figure 1 is a plan view of a' pair of stationary Wash tubs such as are now generally in use, the left hand tub having our improved Washing machine operahousing the cover with the lining, when the machine is not in use, within the tub being iillustrated in the righthand tub. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section taken from front to back of the left hand tub. Fig. 3 is a similar section of the right hand tub. Fig. 4 is adiagrammatic view of one end section, the back and front sections and the bottom section of the lining for the tub, showing more clearly'how said sections are assembled. Fig. 5 is a detailed section through one'of the bolts for detachablyconnecting the cover or top' section to the side and end sections.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2
v edges adj listed in the accompany-- which constitute a part of this and the manner of...
lining section, showing the openings for the faucets, and Fig. 7. is a partial plan view of the bottom lining section showing the drain opening.
and 3,'the left and right hand tubs are designated 1 and 2, respectively. Thelining comprises end sections 3, aback section 4, a front section 5 and a bottom section 6. The end and front sections are placed in the tub first. I These sections areprovidjed with inwardly eXtend-' ing strips or flanges 7 on their lower'edges upon which the bottom section rests for retaining said end and front sections in place.
Patented Apr. 4-, 1916.
Fig. 6 is an elevation of the back i he bottomsection fits. between the lower of the end sections and extends from the lower edge portion of the front section to the back of the tub. The endsections fit between the lateral edge portions of the front the full length of the is put in place last and rests'upon the rear edge portion of the bottom section, thus serving'to hold the latter in position and preventing it from floating. The faucets extending through openings in said back section, as presently described, hold the back section down, that is, prevents it from float ing' up under the action of the water. All the sections are preferably made of wood except the strips 7 which are of galvanized metal. v
The upper surface of the bottom section is corrugated, as at 8, and the other sections have corrugated inner surfaces 9. The back, front and end sections of the lining are further provided ranged horizontally near their upper edges to form a seat for the cover which is made in two parts 13 and l land which fits down within the upper edge portions ofsaid back, front and end sections. The two parts of the cover are detachably secured in place by sliding bolts 15carried by thevcover with cleats or flanges 12 ar and back sections, the latter extending i tub. The back section sections and adapted to engage keepers 16 on the upper edges of the front and end sections, Figs. 1, 4 and 5. The bolts may be easily withdrawn from the keepers for re-. leasing the cover when the machine'is not in use.
The cover is made in machine is not in use, asindicated in dotted lines in right hand tub in Fig. 1 and in sections so as to permit it to be stored in the tub, when the thecover is made wider, than the front-sec tion 14 so that it may carry theagitator oir dolly'l7 which must bedisposed centrally rect-ions for cooperating With theicorrugated inner surfaces of the lining sections to wash the clothes in .thetubf When the cover is removed and 'the sections thereof placed inside the tub, the lever 22 may be turned into line with the longitudinal axis'of the section 14 so that said lever may also be" completely housed in the-tub; I
The bottom sectionof the lining is provided-with a drain opening designed to reg-.
ister with the drain 'opening ofth tub (not shown). 'The back'section 9 has openings '11: through which the faucets (not shown) may extend when the lining is in place. so,
All of the lining sections may-be made with Q the'corrugations 9 on both sides so that they;
. can'be reversed.
cially should be corrugated on both"si'des, j- Y The bottom section espeasat din Figs. and 4, so thatit can be ,tub.
reversed when it is desired to use it in the right hand tub, it being well known that the drain pipesor openings in such'tubs are arranged at either side of and near the central partition' The end section 3 may have notches 23 1n-its upper edge to permit a ,wringer to be secured tothe edgeof the Having thus described" our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A lining for wash tu'bs comprising wardly extending-flangesfand a bottom section to fit'within the lower edge portions of said'sections and upon said flanges for the purpose specified.
2. A sectional lining lorwash tubs comprising a bottom se ction,.a. back section, a
frontsection, and end sections, .the end and front sections having inwardly extending flanges, the bottom section resting upon said flanges, the back vsection resting upon the ,rear edge portion of the bottom section.
3. The combination with a wash tub, of-
a sectional lining therefor comprising wall sections having horizontal cleats on their inner faces near their upper edge's, and a cover to fit within the upperedges of said wallsections and seat uponsaid cleats.
Intestimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification. J AQOB ROSKAM. RICHARD OOMS.
