WASHTUB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1,1912.
Application filed .Tune 29, 1911. Serial No. 635,927.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. REILLY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved VVashtub, of which the followingV is a full, clear, and exact description. j
My invention relates to combination tubs and wringers, my more particular purpose being to provide a tub having a Special form whereby it is adapted to be used in connection with a wringer so located within it that the combination of the tub and wringer presents a number of advantages in the conjoint use of these parts. v
More particularly Stated, my invention comprehends a tub provided with partitions whereby the space withiny it is Sub-divided into compartments, and a wringer disposed within the tub and mounted upon the partitions in such manner that in use the water expressed from the stock by theaction of the wringer first flows freely into one' of the compartments and is thence drained out without interfering with the water or stock contained in other compartments.
My invention further comprehends various details of construction whereby the wringer, the tubs, and the combination of the wringer and tubs are improved in eiiiciency.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a substantially vertical section on the line 1.*1 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow; and Fig. 2 is a cross section substantially on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
A tub is shown at 3, and has generally a box-like form. This tub rests upon legs L and brackets 5, and is provided with two partitions 6, 7, located vertically within it and disposed parallel to each other. A drain pipe 8 is provided with three branches 9, 10, 11, these branches being connected with different portions of the tub. The partition 6 is provided with a gap 12, the partition 7 being similarly provided with a gap 13, these two gaps being in registry with each other. The tub 3 is provided with a gap 111 located within its outer or front wall, and between the partitions 6, 7.
21, these parts being ofthe usual or The wringer isshown more particularly in Fig. 2 and comprises a frame 15 which is held in position by aid of a screw bolt 16, the latter extending through a hole 16al in the partition 7. The wringer is provided with a revoluble shaft 17, and mount- "ed upon 4the outer end of the latter is a crank ar1n18 by aid whereof the shaft is turned. The wringer is further provided with rollers 19, a slide 20, and a leaf spring desired construction. The tub is provided with a swinging lid 22 whereby it may be closed. Water `pipes 23 are connected with the upper portion of the tub, and asso ciated with these water pipes are hand valves 24:.
In order to supportthe wringer it is lowered between the partitions 6, 7 until one corner of the frame 15 engages the adjacent inclined wall of the tub, and the screw bolt 16-:fis next inserted and forced yagain-st the frame 15 of the wringer so as to hold the latter lirmly in position. The mere manner of attaching the wringer forms no part of my invention.
The partitions 6, 7 are so arranged that the bottoms of the gaps 12, 13 serve as overflow barriers, that is to say, if the water be left running freely into the tub, it can climb no higher than the common level represented by the bottoms of the gaps 12, 13. The water flows through either or both of these gaps and makes its escape through the drain pipe 9. The space 25 between the two partitions 6, 7 thus constitutes a drainage compartment. It is adapted to receive water running downwardly from the wringer, this water, however, immediately making its escape. Two spaces 26, 27 disposed on opposite sides of the partitions 6, 7 constitute the compartments for holding water, together, with the stock of clothing upon which the wringer is to operate. Water may, by aid of the pipes 9, 11, be let out of t-he compartments 6, 7 in the usual manner.
The operation of my device is as follows: One of the compartments 26, 27 contains the stock of clothing to be subjected to the action of the wringer and is iilled with water by aid of the adjacent hand valves 24;. Any excess of water which flows into this compartment is leveled off by virtue of the fact that the water cannot climb higher than the bottom of the gap 13. A piece of clothing is now gathered up by hand and inserted in the wringer. The hand crank 18 being turned, the piece of clothing is, by the action of the rollers 19, passed from one compartment 26, 27 to the other and is there comparatively dried in the compartment toward which it travels. The water squeezed out by the action of the wringer within the compartment drops down and nds its way above described. Neither do I limit myself in all instances to the precise arrangement shown, the scope of my invention being commensurate with my claims.
rIhe crank 18 is removable and may, therefore, be taken off at the will of the operator.
The lid 22 may be closed Without disturbing the position of the wringer.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Iletters Patent is z- 1. The combination of a tub, a pair of partitions mounted therein and suitably spaced apart, each partition being provided with a gap, the space between the partitions being adapted to receive a wringer, the bottoms of the said gaps being disposed below the upper edge of the said tub whereby material maypass through the wringer from one side of the tub to the other, to-
. gether with a drain pipe communicating f with the said space and the said sides of the .tub.
2. The combination 0f a tub, a pair of partitions within the tub, the partitions being suitably spaced apart, the space between gthe partitions being adapted to receive a wringer, the said space being provided with a drain pipe whereby, when the wringer is operated, the water dripping therefrom may rbe collected in the space between the partitions, the drain pipe carrying olf the said water.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
