WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1916.
Original application filed May 12, 1915, S'eral No. 27,636. Divided and this application led June 8, 1915.'
Serial No. 32,876.
provement in lVashing-Machines, of whichk the following is a full, clear, and exact specification. v
This invention relates to clothes washing machines and has for its object to provide apparatus of this kind which may be used in an ordinary stationary wash tub such as are now usually found in dwelling houses, apartments and flats.
A special object is to provide such apparatus as can be completely stored in the wash tub when not in use, thus saving.
storage space which is a very important item particularly in modern fiats and apartments.
Another object is to provide improved means for detachably fastening the.cover of the machine to the lining sections.
Other objects will appear as thel description proceeds. i
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which. constitute a part of this specification, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the Vend. of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate correspondingparts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a plan'view of a pair of stationary wash tubs such as are now generally in use, the left hand tub having our improved washing machine operatively attached thereto, and the manner of housing the cover with the lining, when the machine is not in use, within the tub being illustrated in dotted lines in the right hand tub. Fig.' 2 is a central vertical section taken from front-to back of the left hand tub. Fig. 3 is a similar section of the right hand tub showing the cover and lining stored therein, yand Fig. 4 is a detailed section on a larger scale through one of the bolts for detachably connecting the cover or top section to the side and end sections of the lining.
The left and right hand tubs are designated 1 and 2, respectively. The lining comit prises end sections 3, a back section 4, a
front section 5 and a bottom section 6. The end and front sections are placed in the tub first: These sections are provided with inwardly extending strips or flanges 7, Fig. 2, on their lower edges upon which the bottom section 6 rests for retaining said end and font sections in place. The bottom section fits between the lower edges of' the end sections and extends from the lower edge portion of the front section to the back of the tub. The end sections'fit between the lateral edges of the front and back sections, the latter sections extending the full length of the tub. The back section is put 1n place lastand rests upon the rearedge portion of the bottom section, thus serving to hold the latter in positionV and preventing it from floating. The sections are all preferably made of wood except the strips 7 which may be of galvanized metal. p
Both upper and lower surfaces of the bottom section are preferably corrugated at 8 so that it may be reversed when necessary or desirable. Thev other wall lining sections have corrugated inner surfaces 9. The end sections are also provided with cleats o1' flanges 12 arranged horizontally near their upper edges to form a seat for the clover which is made in two parts 13 and 14 and' which fits down within the upper edge portions of said back, front and end sections.
The two parts of the cover are detachably secured in place by sliding bolts 15 carried by the cover sections and adapted to engage keepers 16 on the upper edges of the front and end sections,l Figs. 1 and 4. These bolts may be easily withdrawn from the keepers for releasing the cover when the machine is not in use and it is desired to store the cover sections in the tub` as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3. As illustrated, the rear part 13 of the cover is made wider than the front part 14 so that it may carry the agitator or dolly 17 which must be disposed centrally of the tub. Said agitator or dolly is carried by the vertical shaft 18 journaled in the cover section 13 and having a gear 19 on its upper surface. The front section 14 of the cover carries a segmental gear 2O pivoted at 21 and having an operating lever 22.v lVhen the two parts of the cover are in operative position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the segmental gear 20 meshes withthe gear be rotated alternately in opposite directions and coperate with the corrugated inner surfaces of the lining sections to wash the clothes in the tub. NVhen the cover is removed| and the sections thereof placed inside the tub, the lever 22 may be turned into line with the longitudinal axis of the section 14 so that said lever may also be completely housed in the tub.
This application is a division of our pending application for washing machine, filed May 12, 1915, Serial No. 27636.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. The combination with a wash tub, of a cover therefor made in two sections, one section being wider than the other and extending from one side over the central portion of the tub, an agitator arranged centrally of the tub and mounted on the wider section of the cover, and means for operating the agitator mounted on the other section of the cover, said sections and the parts carried thereby being adapted to place, andan operating lever attached to said segmental gear andadapted to actuate the agitator, said segmental gear being adapted to be turned to bring said lever into line with the longitudinal axis of the section of the cover carrying the same when the cover is removed, whereby said cover sections and parts carried thereby may bek completely housed within the tub when not in use.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specication.
