E. L. GUSTAFSON WASHING MACHINE Filed Feb 11, 1925 -2 Sheets-Sheet 2 l M IFIEB- `have notches 19 in their Patented Dec. 22,` 1925.
UNITED STATES l 1,566,671 PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD L GUSTAFSON, F HOLDREGE, NEBRASKA.
WASHING ivrAoHINn.
Application filed February 11, 1925. Serial No. 81,463.
. construction of the same asl hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section through a machine constructed according to this invention with the sink lid removed, and is taken on the line 1-1- in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. .Fig 3 is a detail front view of the toothed segment and removable handle. Fig. 4'is a side view of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail frontl view of the handle. F ig. 6 is a front view of the sink when closed by its lid, and is drawn to a smallerscale.
A rectangular vessel 8 is provided, and is divided into two compartments 9 and 10 by a partition 12. The smaller compartment or chamber 9 is closed by a removable lid 14 when the washing. machine is not. in use. The larger compartment 10 has a drain pipe for water at its bottom. Thevessel 8 is secured against the side of a wall by any suitable brackets the same as an ordinary kitchen sink, and can be used foral] the purposes of a kitchen sink. Any other similar rectangular vessel, such as a stationary wash basin, can'be used to Support the washing machine.
In order to provide a means for occasionally washing small articles of clothing the small compartment or chamber 9 has a wash tub 16 secured to its bottom. A- box 17 is provided and is hinged to t loosely in the compartment 9 over the washA tub. This box may be removed and replaced by hand,
and is covered by the lid 14 when the washing mach-ine is not in use. Two brackets 18 are secured to the bottom of the box, and
tops.
A removable horizontal shaft 20 is pro'- .-vided, and has rectangular end portions 21 which t in the notches 19. The shaft 20 has a cylindrical portion 22, and a beveled toothed segment 24 is mounted to rock on the part 22.I This segment has a hub 25, and 1s retained 1n place on the shaft between a pin 26 and a shoulder 27. The hub 25 has parallel grooves 28 formed in it, and the segment has sockets 29 secured to it in line with the groovesf28. 4The segment is oscillated by means of a removable handle 30, having a forked end portion 31. The forked end portion is slid in the grooves 28 and into the sockets 29, so that the handle rests on the hub of the segment.
A beveled toothed wheel 34 is arranged to mesh into the segment 24, and it has a hub 35 which is journaled in a hole or bearing 36 in the bottom of the box. A vertical shaft 37 is provided, and has a rectangular portion 38 which engages with a corresponding` opening in the wheel 34. The shaft 37 is sustained by a pin 39 which projects from it, and a washer 40 between the said pinand wheel. The upper end of the .shaft 37 has a shaft bearing 41 'which is journaled in a hole in the horizontal shaft 20.
The lower end portion of the vertical shaft 37 has an agitator42on it which works in the wash tub 16, and is used to wash small articles in the usual way. The agitator preferably has a hub 44 which is mounted to slide vertically on the lower rectangular end portion of the vertical shaft, and the shaft has a projection 45 on its lower end which fits in a recess in the hub, and prevents the agitator from dropping ofi the shaft. l
lThe box together with the mechanism in it can be removed and replaced as often as desired, and when the washing machine is in use the wet clothes can be putinto the klarger compartment to drain. When the washing machine is not in use the handle is removed, andis laid down inside thel box, and the small. compartment is closed b the lid 14. The device can be used as a liitchen sink when the lid is on, and it can also be used as a sink or wash tub with the lid 14 and the box 17 and the washing mechanism removed from the larger compartment.
An outlet valve 46 for wat` r is secured to the bottomof the wash tubg-and is`connected to the drain pipe 15 by. a pipe 47.
When the box is hinced to the outer vessel, the bottom of the box is provided with a removable section48 to get out the agita-tor.
What I claim isf: 1. The combination, with a stationary supporting vessel, and a wash tub secured to the bottom thereof; of a removable box hinged at its top edge to the top edge of the said vessel and adapted to rest on the bottom of it, said box being provided with a removable section in its bottom over the Wash tub, a horizontal shaft arranged inside the box, a beveled toothed segment supported on the said shaft, a removable handle :tor oscillating the toothed segment, a beveled toothed Wheel' meshing in the toothed segment and journaled in the said removable section, a vertical shaft revolved by the said wheel, an agitator mounted on the vertical shaft inside the Wash tub, and a lid' which closes the removable box when the medew.
operating handle is removed from the toothed segment.
2. A. combination of parts as set forth in claim l, the said vertical shaft being reetangular and engaging with a corresponding hole in the beveled toothed Wheel and having a shaft bearing at its top which is journaled in a hole in the horizontal shaft, and means which support the vertical shaft from the beveled toothed Wheel.
In testimony whereof l have affixed my signature.
