Patented Sept. 3, 1940 UNITED STATES DISHWASHING, RINSING, AND STERILIZ- ING DEVICE.

Application August 2,
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a unit for the washing, rinsing and sterilizing of dishes and the like, and has for the primary object the provision of a device of this character which will require only a 5 minimum amount of space for its installation and use and will permit the various mentioned operations to be easily and quickly carried out in a highly sanitary manner and due to its construction will conserve water in the washing operation and the water may be heated to any desired temperature while within the device.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a. top plan view illustrating a dishwashing, rinsing and sterilizing unit constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevation, partly in section, illustrating the same.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3--3 of Figure 2. I
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 5 indicates an elongated trough supported in a horizontal position through the use of legs 6. The trough has rising from its rear wall a splash board 1 extending the full length of the trough. Arranged in the trough are transversely disposed partitions 8 dividing said trough in a washing chamber 9, a rinsing chamber I and a steriliz- 35 ing chamber I I. A portion of the bottom wall of the trough is in stepped formation so as to dispose the bottom of the chamber 9 in a plane below the bottom of the chambers II] and II as clearly shown in Figure 2. The bottom of the chamber 40 9 has a drain pipe I2 connected thereto which may lead to a conventional sewer. Arranged under the bottom'of the chambers I0 and II are gas burning type burners I3 for the purpose of heating the chambers and contents to a desired temperature. The bottoms of the chambers Ill and II have connected thereto down-pipes I4 in which are located control valves I5. The downpipes I4 are connected to a drain pipe I 6 leading to the chamber 9. Through the use of the control valves I the liquid contents of the chambers III and I I may bedirected into the chamber 9.
By reference to Figure 2 it will be seen that the upper edges of the walls of the chambers are arranged in stepped formation in accordance with the bottoms of said chambers. A removable lid I1 may be adapted to either of the chambers Ill and II, and in the use of this device it is preferable that a basket (not shown) for containing the taken 1939, Serial No.- 288,047
dishes after being washed can be positioned in either of the chambers or compartments I0 and I I. Further it is to be understood that water may be introduced into the chambers or compartments in any well known manner and that the device or unit may be constructed of any material suitable for the purpose.
In operation, the dishes are Washed within the chamber or compartment 9 and then removed therefrom and placed in the basket (not shown). The basket containing the dishes is placed in the compartment or chamber In and thoroughly rinsed and permitted to drain. After this operation the basket containing the dishes is then positioned in the compartment or chamber II' with the lid I'I thereon and thoroughly sterilized therein. After the sterilizing operation the basket containing the dishes may be removed from the chamber II and placed on a tableor like support. A device of the character described and shown in the drawing is compact permitting the various operations to be easily carried out with a minimum amount of movement on the part of the washer and further it will be seen that the unitdue to its compactness may be readily installed within a comparatively small space and is especially useful where large numbers of dishes and the like have to be washed, rinsed and sterilized within a comparatively short period of time and permits these operations to be successfully carried out in a highly sanitary manner.
It is to be understood that the drain pipe I2 for the chamber or compartment 9 can be opened and closed through the use of an ordinary closure plug (not shown).
It is believed that the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawing will fully set forth the construction and advantages of this invention to those skilled in the art to which such a device relates, so that further detailed description will not be required.
What I claim is:
In a device of the character set forth comprising a trough, means for supporting said trough horizontally and in an elevated position, said trough including portions arranged in stepped relation, a pair of compartments formed in one of the stepped portions of the trough and the other stepped portion forming a single compartment, means for heating the pair of compartments, a sewer drain connected to the single compartment, a drain including control valves connected to the pair of compartments and to the single compartment whereby fluid content of either compartment of said pair of compartments may pass into the single compartment under manual control.
