UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AXEL WETTERVIK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED WASHSTAND AND DRESSING-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,408, dated June 13, 18 93.
' Application filed February 27,1893. Serial No. 463,904. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beitknown that I, AXEL WETTERVIK, a cit-izen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,
5 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Washstand and Dressing-Case, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to improvements in combined wash-stands and dressing-cases, and consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifir5 cally claimed.
The objects of my invention are first, to provide a piece of furniture, which shall be attractive in appearance, and will serve the double purpose of a dressing-case and wash- 20 stand, thus economizing in space; second,
suol ra piece of furniture which when not in useas a wash-stand, will present the appearance of a dressing-case or bureau, and will contain and conceal the necessary toilet arti- 2 5 cles, such as water, soap, perfumery, towels, brushes, &c. and third, a device for the above named purpose which shall be simple in construction and operation and quite inexpenslve.
In order to'enable others skilled in the art, to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a view in front elevation of my invention, as it appears when closed and in use as a dressing-case. Fig. 2, is a similar View, as it appears when open and ready for use as a wash-stand. Fig. 3, is a sectional 40 plan View, taken on line 3, 3, of Fig. 2. Fig.
4, is a vertical sectional view, taken on line 4, 4, of Fig. 2. Fig. 5, is a perspective view of a portion of the top of the dressing-case detached, showing one of its lifting-levers or Fig. 6, is a view thereof partly in section. Fig. '7, is a rear view of the rear portion of the wash-basin, and fragment of the water-reservoir, showing its lug to operate the cover of the soap-dish. Fig. 8, is a plan view of a fragment of the rear part of the wash-basin, showing the soap-dish therein,
with its cover lowered. Fig. 9, is .a sectional view of the front part of the Water-reservoir, and of the rear part of the wash-basin with its soap-dish, showing the manner in which the top thereof is automatically raised. Fig. 10, is a perspective view of a portion of the base, in which the basin is located, and showing the top of the soap receptacle covered; and Fig. 11, is a perspective view of a similar part, with the top of said receptacle removed. I
Similar letters refer to like parts throughout the difierent views of the drawings.
A, represents the main frame of my invention, which may be made of any suitable size and material, but preferably rectangular,
and of the design shown in the drawings.
The upper portion of the frame A, is provided with a mirror B, beneath which is the top 0, of the stand, which top is composed of the lids c, for the water-reservoir and the lid 0', of the front part of the stand, which serves to keep the base D, in which the wash-basin E, is located in a vertical position. As is clearly seen in Fig. 4, the lids c, and c, are hinged to an upright partition 0 which partition forms the front part of the water-receptacle W, which may be of any suitable size 7 and material, but usually rectangular in form, and is provided at its front lower portion with a faucet 10, through which the water is admitted to the basin. Near one of the front corners of the water-reservoirgor receptacle,
is provided or attached a downwardly extend lug or arm 21., which engages with the top or cover f, of the soap-receptacle F, which is formed in the upper surface of the rear part of the base D, which base is hinged or pivotally secured, (as at a,) at about its middle to the front of the main frame, and is provided with a basin E, through the bottom of which is form ed an opening or outlet E, for the passage of'the water afterit has been used. As isclearly shown in Fig. 4, of the drawings, the opening or outlet E, extends rearward through the base D, so that the water when allowed to escape from the basin will be carried away from the front part of the frame A, and also, so that when the base D, is raised to a vertical position, the lower end of the outlet E, will be below the pivot or hinged point a. To each side and near the rear part of the base D, are pivotally secured at their lower ends the lifting-rods G, which are pivotally connected at their upper ends to the pieces g, which are secured at their other ends to the lower surface of the lid or top 0, the lower surface of which is provided with a longitudinal cleat 0 which over-laps and engages with the front part of the base D, when the latter is raised to a vertical position, and there retains the same. The lower surface of the lid 0, is also provided with a towel-rack c, which extends cross-wise thereof, as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 2.
Within the main frame A, and beneath the water-receptacle W, and the base D, is placed a sink H, which is substantially funnel-shaped in form, and has at its lower portion an outlet or opening h, through which the water may escape into the slop-vessel 1,-whi-ch is placed in the lower part of the frame, and may rest upon a shelf 1', for this purpose.
As shown in the drawings, the lower portion of the frame A, is provided with doors A, which may be opened for the insertion or removal of the slop-basin.
As is clearly shown in the drawings, the rear portion of the upper surface ofthe base D, and near one of its corners, is provided with a soap-receptacle F, which is usually in the form of a depression, and has formed at its outer or rear end, openings f, through which the water may be drained from the soap. The rear side of the base D, is also formed with arece'ss or mortise'F, which extends to near the rear part of the-receptacle F, and is to admit the lug u, upon the lower part of the water-receptacle W, which lug is adapted to strike against the rear extension f, of the top f, of the soap-dish F, which top is pivotally secured in suitable bosses j, on the base D, which are clearly shown in Fig. 11, of the drawings.
When it is desired to convert my device into a wash stand it is only necessary to raise the lid 0, until the cleat c thereon, is disengaged from the base D, when the latter may be lowered to a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 4, which operation by means of the rods G, and g, will completely raise the lid 0', and will retain the same in its upright position, when access to the basin E, may be readily had, and the water admitted thereto through the faucetw, from the reservoir W, and passes therefrom through the outlet E, into the sink H, which will convey it to the slop-jar or vessel I, which may be removed at pleasure from the lower portion of the frame.
It will be observed that in lowering the base D, the lugu, on the water-receptacle will engage with the extended portion f of the top f, of the soap-receptacle, and will raise the same to a vertical position, as shown in Figs. 9 and 10, and. thus allow free access to the soap, and the water will be drained therefrom through the openings f, when the basin and its base are raised to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4.
In Fig. 2, of the drawings, I have shown on each side of the reservoir W, a number of 1 drawers L, for the reception ofbrushes, combs, 1 and other toilet articles, and beneath said drawers I have provided recesses M, for the reception of shaving-mugs, puff-boxes", perfumery and the like.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a combined wash-stand and dressingcase, the combination of the main frame A, having the water-reservoir W, with the base D, having the basin E, and pivotally secured to the front of the frame, the lid c, having the cleat 0 to engage the base D, the rods G, and pieces g, connected together and uniting .the said base and lid, and adapted to hold the latter in an upright position, substantially as described.
2. In a combined wash-stand and dressingoase, the combination of the frame A, having the mirror B, with the reservoir W, having the hinged lid 0, faucet w, and lug or projection it, and located in the upper part of the frame, the base D, pivotally secured to the front of the frame and having the basin E, provided with the extended outlet E, and soap-receptace F, having the door f, with extended part f to engage the lug u, on the reservoir, the lid 0, having the cleat c, to engage the base when in an upright position, the rods G, secured at their lower ends to the base D, and having at their upper ends the pieces 9, secured to the lid 0, and adapted to raise said lid, and to hold it in an upright position, all constructed, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
AXEL WETTERVIK.
