P. E BRA-HE. COMBINED WASH STAND AND OHAMBBRPAIL. No. 475,052. Patented May 1'7, 1892..
W/TNL'SSES. INVENTOR A T TORI/E Y5 ja w p NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK H. BRAI-IE, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED WASH-STAND AND CHAMBER-PAIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,052, dated May 1'7, 1892. Application filed September 5, 1891. Serial No. 404,801. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. BRAHE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Wash-Stand and Chamber-Pail, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined washstand and chamber-pail which is intended for use in the, sleeping apartments of hotels, boarding-houses, and similar buildings, so as to avoid the objectionable soiling of the floor by spilling the urine when discharging the contents of the chamber-pot into the slop-jar, and by which a wash-basin is furnished the contents of which can be discharged directly into the slop-jar after the same has been used, so that a separate wash-stand may be dispensed with.
The invention consists of a combined chamber-pail and wash-basin, which comprises a base or casing that extends around the slopjar, said casing being. open at the bottom and closed at the top, so as to act as a cover for the pail. above the casing by means of suitable braces or stays, a connecting-pipe between the receiving-basin and the top of the base or casing, and a wash-basin that is guided in slotted ways supported by suitable brackets on the receiving-basin, so as to be moved in forward or backward direction, and a discharge-pipe that extends from the bottom of the wash-basin into the receiving-basin, so as to be placed in line with the connecting-pipe between the basin and the top 'part of the casing, and permit thereby the direct discharge of the contents of the wash-basin into the slop-jar.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved chamber-pail and wash-stand on line 1 1, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, parts being broken out. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on line 3 3, Fig. 2.v
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings,Arepresents the base or casing of my improved chamber-pail and wash-stand. This casing is open at the bottom' and closed at the top and made of a A receiving-basin is supported height to correspond with the height of the slop-jar A, which the casing is intended to inclose.
' The top of the casing A is preferably perabove the bottom of the receiving-basin D and recessed at one side, so that the projecting portion is of semicircular shape, said semicircular portion serving as a stop or abutment d for the discharge-pipe E of a wash-basin E, which is guided by means of headed studs 6 in parallel slotted guideways e whichare supported by upwardly-extending arms E on the receiving-basin D. The wash-basin E may be moved in forward direction until the discharge-pipe E abuts against the semicircular upper part of the connecting-pipe D in backward direction as far as the slotted ways e will permit, in which case the discharge-pipe terminates in an extension D of the receiving-basin D, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. The parallel slotted guideways e are connected at their rear ends by a transverse piece E, which may be provided with depressions that form receptacles for the soap, tooth-brush, and the like, theentire structure being preferably enameled, japanned, nickel-plated, or otherwise finished, so as to present a neat and attractive appearance. A towel supporting roller may be mounted and held on braces at the rear of the piece e, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The wash-basin E is provided with a plug f, that is attached by a chain f to the washbasin, said plug serving to close the upper end of the discharge-pipe E when the basin is to be used. For this purposethe washbasin is moved in a forward direction in its guideways into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. After the wash-basin has been used the plug is removed and the contents of the same discharged directly through the discharge-pipe E and the connecting pipe into the slop-pail. If the chamber-pot Icois to be discharged into the slop-jar, the Washbasin is removed-in its'guideways-in a back ward direction so as to clear the front part of the receiving-basin D, in which position it is out of the Way of the wash-basin, so that its contents can be readily discharged into the receiving-basin, from which they are transferred into the slop-jar. Any drippings from the wash-basin are conveyed by the discharge-pipe into the receiving-basin and discharged from the same into the slop-jar, so that the contents of the wash-basin serve to some extent for flooding therec'eiving-basin and keeping the same in clean condition. I
The structure combines the advantages of three different elements namely, a slop-jar, which is covered by the closing-casing A, a receiving-basin for the contentsoi" the chamber, and a wash-basin so that the ordinary wash-stand and t-he'unsightly slop-j ars placed alongside of the same are'dispensed with and combine with a wash-basin in one structure.
The advantages'ofmy improved chamberpail and wash stand"arethatit combinesin a 4 neat and convenient manner the function of a wash basin and reoeiving-b'asin "for the chamber with a slop ja'r, in which latter the contentsofthe wash-basin and the chamber are discharged without-any spilling of the same, as was frequently the" case heretofore.
It also pe'rmits'to-some extent the direct use of the ree'eiving-basin as a chamber without any spilling and-injuring of the carpet and without the escape of obnoxious SIHGHSTI'ODI the sl'op-jar.-- The oil- 010m mat usually used below theslop-ja'r may be dispensed with;
price'and durable constructionforms a very attractive structure for bed-rooms generally. Having' thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of a base or casing open at the bottom and closed at the top and adapted to-inclose a slop-jar, a receivingbasin mounted stationary upon said base or casing and provided with an extension, a connecting-pipe between the receiving-basin and the top of the casing, a sliding or movable wash-basin supported above the receiving-basin and adapted to slide in said extension, and a discharge-pipe extending from the bottom of the wash-basin into the receiving-basin, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a baseor casing open at the bottom and closed at the top and adapted to inclose a slop-jar, a receivingbasin mounted stationary upon said ,base or casing and provided with an extension a connecting-pipe"between the receiving-bjasin and top' of the "casingihorizontal guides ex; tending'abovdthe' receiving-basin, a washbasin supported by and movable in said guides and in said extension, and a discharger pipe extending from the bottom of the wash,-
basin into the receiving-basin, substantially as described.
3. The'combination of acasingextending around the slop-jar and resting by'its top on the same, a receiving-basin supported'above basin supported above: the 'receiving-ba sin and adapted to be moved in forward orback,
ward direction in said extension, and a dis eular upward extension or abutment which serves as astop' for'the sliding basima wash:
charge-pipe extending from' the' bottonrlof v the wash-basin intofthe receiving-basin,sub
stantially -as se'tforth.
Intestimon'y thatl claim the foregoing as my invention I havesignediny name in pres;
ence of two subscribing witnesses. FREDERICK H. BRAHE Vitnesses: H. E. BROWN,
MARK D. SHAY.
