w. D. RICHARDSON CONTAINER FOR BATHROOM SUPPLIES Filed Dec. 6, 1944 w W Z M W .uyll/lllllll Patented June 7, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE 2,472,683 CONTAINER FOR BATHROOM SUPPLIES William D. Richardson, Ontario, Calif. Application December 6, 1944, Serial No. 566,876
4 Claims.
My invention relates to bathroom furniture, and it is an object of the same to provide a safe, convenient and inconspicuous container in which may be placed such a brush as is commonly used to clean closet bowls and the like. The usual experience is that there is no suitable place where such a brush can be placed when not in use, and so that it will be out of sight and will not drain onto other objects or be otherwise objectionable, and the device of my invention furnishes the first satisfactory means for taking care of the situation. Another object of the invention is to provide a convenient place for storage of such detergents as are commonly used with the said brush.
Another object is to provide a convenient place for temporary storage of wet napkins and the like, with a filter to dry moist articles and to deodorize them, as well as other moist articles peculiar to the bathroom.
Another object is to provide a cigarette and ash tray in combination with the other parts described herein.
Another object is to provide a construction which shall discourage persons from sitting on it. This is necessary, or at least highly desirable, in order that the device may be made of light construction and cheap materials, so that it can be sold at a price attractive to the public, and so that it may be safe from carelessness that might destroy it even if made of strong construction, while also liable to cause falls and other accidents of more or less seriousness.
In general it is the object of my invention to provide cheap, simple and effective means for taking care of problems that are in the nature of a household nuisance, and that are not readily to be obviated by home made expedients.
Referring now to the annexed drawings, which are made a part of this application and in which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Fig. 1 is a vertical section of my device, on line Il of Fig. 2,
Fig. 2, a top plan view of the device,
Fig. 3, a section of the upper cover, on line 3-3 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4, a cross section, on line 4-4 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 5, a cross section on line 5-5 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 6, a detail section of the joint between the container and cover.
In the drawings, reference character It] indicates the outer wall of the device, which has a base I l and an inner cover or top member 12 closing oif the space underneath it, this inner cover being supported on the outer wall, as here shown,
by means of an annular shoulder l3. Instead of 2 an annular shoulder a few brackets spaced about the periphery of the wall may be substituted.
The top I2 carries three containers, as here indicated, which containers may be punched out of a sheet of metal and so be continuous with the sheet metal of the top or may be molded out of plastic in one piece with the top or be made in other fashions, as desired. The middle container or pocket M is the deepest and is proportioned to hold a bowl brush, Whereas one of the side pockets at it is round to receive a can of Old Dutch Cleanser and the other pocket at It is square to receive a package of Bon Ami, though of course other fixture cleaning agents may be substituted for those named.
At a point below the pockets, and preferably resting directly on the base H I provide guides IT, IT for a drawer it that is shaped to fit in the wall in at its rear end and to complete the oblong conformation of the wall at its exposed end, a button l9 being provided on the drawer for pulling it out and returning it to place, said drawer fitting closely with the adjacent wall and base.
Above the top cover 12 there is a removable cover 20 with a depending rim having a flange 2| at its outer margin to interfit with a shoulder on the wall Hi. This cover 20 has a depending flange 2 l shaped to receive and hold a filter 2 l of suitable character to dry and deodorize the air in the device. It is also furnished with ventilating holes 22 arranged in a circle or otherwise according to taste or desire and extending through the cover 2!] inside the flange 2!.
The cover 20 is preferably shaped so as to slope upwardly toward the center toward a central upwardly extending flange 23 that forms an ash holder and which has laterally projecting troughlike parts 24 serving to hold cigars or cigarettes. At the center of the ring-flange the cover is shaped, as shown at 25, with a round opening for use in snufling out a burning cigarette.
The filter to be used will preferably be of the dehydrating, deodorizing chemical type, adapted to destroy all odors that might come from a brush that has been used to clean the toilets, etc., or from cleaning materials and devices that may be stored in the container, or from sanitary napkins or the like in the drawer. The container serves to keep all such things out of sight and in a sanitary condition. It may be built into a new or a remodeled house, with such alterations as are obviously required. The ash tray on the top of the cover adds to the utility of the container being preferably so designed as to ailord. a convenient handle for removing the cover, and also serving to keep people from using the container as a seat. It is intended that the container shall be designed as an attractive bathroom fixture, as well as being a convenience for making readily available cleansing materials, brushes, etc., to be used in cleaning the bathroom. The container may be made of any suitable material or combination of materials such as wood, paper products, metal, glass, tile, plastics etc.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that my device may be changed in shape and in other details in many ways, without departing from the spirit of the invention; therefore I do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification, but only. as indicated in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described'my invention, what I claim is:
1. A container for bathroom supplies, comprising a casing elliptical in'horizontal cross-section, a fixed" annular shoulder inside the casing at its upper end, an elliptical top member closing said casing and resting at its periphery on said shoulder, saidtop member having a deep integral pocketfor receiving a toilet bowl brush and shallow-integral pockets at opposite sides of the deep pocket for receiving cleaning preparations and anellipt-ical lid for the casing, said lid resting on said shoulder and having an annular flange encircling the'upper end of the casing and matchingwiththeouter wall of the casing.
21 A container'for bathroom cleansing devices comprising an outer casing, a top member there'- for having a horizontal portion with a deep integral pocket for a toilet bowl brush and shallow integral pockets at opposite sides of said deep pocket for packages ofdetergent preparations, a
der for supporting the lid and said lid having adepending flange surrounding the fixed supporting member and matching with the outside of the casing.
3. A container for bathroom cleansing devices comprising a casing elliptical in horizontal section, a ring fixed thereto and extending above the upper end of the casing, said ring having an inner shoulder, a top member having a horizontal portion supported by said shoulder and having a deep pocket for a bath bowl brush and shallow pockets at opposite sides thereof for holding packages of. cleansing, preparations. and a cap fitting about said ring and having an inner shoulder resting on the upper margin of the casing.
4. A container for bathroom supplies, comprising a bodymember elliptical in horizontal section, a top closingsaid member at its upper end, said top having a depending deep integral pocket adapted to'receive'a toilet bowl brush and having shallow integral pockets at opposite sides of said deep'pocket adapted to receive packages of detergents, and a lid fitting over the body and top, ventilating apentures'in-the lid, a flange at the" under side: of" tiielid surrounding said apertures, and a body of d'eodorizing material supported by said fi'ange;
D.- RICHARDSON.
