MORTIMER A. THOCRPE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SANITARY GARBAGE-RECEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters mm;
Patented Aug. 8, 1911.
Application filed September 2, 1910. Serial No. 580,178.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORTIMER A. Tnonrn, a subject of Great Britain, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Garbage-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification accompanied by drawings.
' This invention relates to sanitary garbage receptacles and the objects of the invention are to provide means for thoroughly disinfecting and deodorizing the contents of the receptacle.
Means have heretofore been provided for introducing a disinfecting and deodorizing material within a. garbage can or receptacle having a closed cover which prevents the free circulation of atmospheric air within the can from the outside. Such a closed garbage can is subject to the disadvantage of what may be termed sweating by'which moisture accumulates on the walls of the can, due to the heat of decomposition of the garbage, and this moisture further aids the decomposition of the garbage and increases the obnor' ous smell. I have found that free circulation of air should be provided. from the outside through the cover of the can and through the disinfecting material, in order to reduce as far. as possible this sweating action andcarry oft as rapidly as possible all traces ofodor, instead of sealing the obnoxious fumes within the can.
One of the primary objects of my invention is to disinfect and deodorize the fumes and gases of the garbage in a continuous manner as rapidly as possible and dissipate them in the outer atmosphere in a harmless and unobnoxious condition as quickly as they arise. To this end I provide means for continuously and freely allowing the outer atmospheric air to circulate back and forth through the cover of the can and through the disinfecting and deodorizing material.
The invention is shown in its preferred embodiment in theaccompanying drawings, in which Figure l is an elevation of a garbage can showing the cover in transverse section, and F ig. 2 is a similar view of a modification in which either liquid or dry disinfecting material may be used as desired.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the receptacle in the form of a can of any suitable and usual form having the usual handles 13. .The cover C in Fig. 1 preferably comprises a single thickness of sheet metal having the rim D adapted to fit over the top of the can A. The cover G as shown is provided with perforations E preferably arranged at the center of the cover, beneath the handle F, although said perforated portion of the cover may be located at any desired place in the cover. Around the perforated portion of the cover and preferably on top of the cover is secured, as by solder, a screw threaded flange or projection G forming a disinfecting chamber, over which is allowed to freely and continuously circulate through the chamber H, and the fumes from the garbage must pass out through the perforations E and J and through the material K, thus effectually preventing odors. I have found that a can constructed in this manner operates satisfactorily and well to eliminate odors.
In Fig. 2, the cover L is provided as before with the perforations E and in this instance the flange 0 is secured around the perforations E beneath the cover. A cup or receptacle P isscrew threaded onto the flange. 0, and is preferably provided with a centrally raised portion Q, having the perforations R in its'top portion, so that an annular space S is provided for the reception of a liquid or dry disinfectant T. In this construction, as in Fig. 1, continuous circulation of air is aiforded through the cover and through the cup or receptacle 1?. I claim and desire to obtain by Letters Patent the following:
A sanitary garbage receptacle comprising "a can and a cover therefor, said cover having a perforated portion affording free communication between the outside atmosphere and theinside of the can, a flange surrounding said perforated portion and a remo able cup having a centrally raised and perforated center fitting over said flange and over said perforated portion of the cover and underneath the cover, anti adapted to conspecificationin the presence of two subscribtain a liquid or ldryhdisinfectmg and deing witnesses. v
odorizing materia w ere y continuous circulzition of airis p rovided. through said cup EMORTIMER H 5 and between the inside of the can and the 'Witnesses:
M. M. REIMANN,
imfer atmospheric air. "J In testimony whereof I have signed this 2 WILLIAM J HARVEY.
