ROYAL E. DEANE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DISINFECTING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,949, dated February 20, 1900.
Application filed October 2, 1897. Serial No- 658,859. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROYAL E. DEANE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Sterilizing, Deodorizing, or Disinfecting Purposes or other Purposes where Steam, Hot Air, Vapor, or Gases are Used, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction and operation of such apparatus; and the object of my improvements is to provide a simple and efficient apparatus whereof the entrance is closed from within and tightened automatically and kept tight by the expansive pressure of the steam, 'vapor, or gases inclosed.
An apparatus for steam sterilization embodying my improvements is shown, for example, in the accompanying drawings, wherein similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different views.
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the apparatus, and Fig. 2 shows a sectional view of the means and method used for securing the desired entrance to the apparatus.
The chamber'Ais spherical and is the best shape for many purposes; but it is obvious that a spherical front might be adapted to a chamber of anysize or proportions. Inside the chamber may be fitted with any'suitable supports for the different articles to be subjected to treatment. As illustrated, the gasburner shown underneath would serve to supply external heat to the air contained within the chamber for dry sterilization, or steam could be conducted from any source of supply and introduced directly within the chamber for moist sterilization orother purpose in any usual way.
The chamber A is provided with a circular opening or entrance 0 and a corresponding circular door B with recessed handle E, which rolls into position to close the opening or to one side to give entrance on and in a track indicated by the dotted lines D in Fig. 1 and shown constructed of flanges F F in Fig. 2.
scribed, is also spherical or dished in cou' tour to conform to the inside lines of the spherical chamber A, and its rim accurately fits the rim of the circular opening when closed. It is easy to grind these parts to such a tight joint that there is no need of packing.
In operation the natural expansion of the steam, hot air, Vapor, or gas contained in the chamber automatically makes and keeps the closed door tight, and should the pressure fall too low accidentally the door, running loosely in its tracks, is automatically released and opened enough to prevent a vacuum and collapse of the chamber.
What I'claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An apparatus consisting of a spherical chamber with circular entrance and corresponding circular convex door operated in suitable tracks located on the concave interior, combined with suitable means for producing therein steam, vapor or gas for sterilizing or other purposes substantially as specified.
2. An apparatus consisting of a chamber with spherical front having a circular entrance and corresponding circular convex door operated in suitable tracks located on the concave interior, combined with suitable means for producing therein steam, vapor or gas for sterilizing or other purposes substantially as specified.
ROYAL E. DEANE.
Witnesses: I
