Description

C. MEYER. 'STERILIZERY.
APPLICATION FILED MAY], 1917.
Patented Aug. 21, 1917.
CONRAD MEYER,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR T CARL WI'ITIVIANN, OF NEW YORK, n. Y.
STERILIZER.
Application filed May 7, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CONRAD MEYER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sterilizers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to sterilizers for dental and surgical instruments, and the like, and has for its object to provide a device of this kind of improved construction and adapted to sterilize a considerable number of instruments at the same time.
Another object is to sterilize the instruments more effectively by subjecting them to the action of superheated steam. Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute part of, this specification, and then more specifically delined in the claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a front elevation of a sterilizer constructed substantially in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line II-II of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the sterilizer.
Fig. 4 is an under plan view thereof.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the tray for holding the instruments to be sterilized.
Fig. 6 is a broken front elevation of the 4.0 sterilizer, showing the steam pipe and gas burner.
Fig. 7 is a detail view of the ring pull on the tray, and
Fig. 8 is a detailed view of one of the supports for the gas burner.
The sterilizer comprises a casing 1 preferably rectangular in form and supported on legs 2. The casing is divided by a vertical transverse partition 3 into a steam generating chamber 4iand a sterilizing chamber 5, as best illustrated in Fig. 6. The bottom of the chamber 5 is open at 6, Fig. 4. In the front of the chamber 5 there is an opening 7 for the insertion and removal of a tray 10 for holding the instruments to be steri- Specification of Letters Patent.

lized. Said tray is supported within the sterilizer by hangers 8 at each end having inwardly turned flanges 9, Fig. 6.
The tray 10 has a front plate 11 which is somewhat larger than the opening in the front of the sterilizer and adapted to close said. opening and form a stop to limit the inward movement of the tray. The bottom of the tray is perforated, as at 14. On the front plate 11 there is a ring pull 12 for drawing out the tray when it is not hot. Other pulls or handles 13 are also provided for use when the tray is hot, said latter handles being insulated from the heat in any suitable manner. 7 O
l Vater may be supplied to the steam generating chamber of the sterilizer through a pipe 16 having a removable plug or cap 15. The pipe 16 has two branches entering the casing, a lower one 17-and an upper one 18,
the latter being arranged above the normal level of the water in the casing. The filling pipe 16 also contains a water gage 19 be tween the branches 17 and 18.
A pipe 20 extends up from the bottom portion of the steam generating chamber a to a point well above the normal water level therein, and has a downwardly turned upper end 21 terminating preferably slightly above the branch pipe 18. The pipe 20 ex tends through the partition 3 and along the full length of the sterilizing chamber 5 just above the opening in the bottom thereof. The extremity of the pipe extension 22 is supported by a suitable bracket 24, while the place where it passes through the parti tion 3 is fitted with water tight packing 25. The horizontal pipe section 22 has perfora tions 23 along its upper face through which steam generated in the chamber 4 and conducted to said pipe section 22 by the pipe 20, may be discharged into the sterilizing chamber against the perforated bottom of the tray 10. The steam generating chamber a is preferably provided with a drain cook 26.
Below the casing 1 and entirely independent thereof is a gas burner 27 comprising a straight pipe extending the full length of said casing, and supported on suitable brackets 28. Said gas burner pipe 27 has a large opening 29 in its upper face below the steam generating chamber, and a series of smaller openings 30 in its upper face below the sterilizing chamber. The flame from the large opening 29 plays upon the bottom of the steam generating chamber and serves to heat the water therein to form the steam, while the flames from the smaller openings 30 play directly upon the steam pipe 22, whereby the steam ejected from said pipe 22 through the openings 23 therein is highly superheated before it comes in contact with the instruments placed in the tray 10130 be sterilized. The burner pipe 27 may be fitted with the usual Bunsen-coupling 31 to which" a hose (not shown) from a gas fixture may,
be attached. A vent 32 for the steam may be placed at the top of the sterilizing chamber. The superheated steam after passing up through the perforated bottom of the tray 10 and acting upon the instruments which may be placed therein, escapes through said vent 32 to the outside atmosphere.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a sterilizer of the character described, a sterilizing chamber having an opening inits bottom, a steam pipev arranged in said chamber above the opening and having steam ejection perforations in its upper face, and a gas burner extending below the opening in the bottom of the sterilizing chamber and having openings in its upper face from which flames are adapted to play directly upon the steam pipe for the purpose specified.
2. In a sterilizer of the character de scribed, a casing, a partition dividing said casing into a steam generating chamberand a sterilizing chamber, the latter being open at the bottom, a steam pipe for conveying steam from the steam generating chamber to the sterilizing chamber, said steam pipe extending along the open bottom of said latter' chamber and having steam ejecting openings in its upper face, and a burner extending below both chambers and having openings from which flames may play upon the generating chamber and also upon the steam conveying pipe through the. bottom of the sterilizing chamber for the purpose specified.
3. In a sterilizer of the character described, a casing containing a steam generating chamber and a sterilizing chamber, means in the latter chamber for holding in struments to be sterilized, a steam pipe for conveying steam from the generating chamher to the sterilizing chamber, said steaml pipe extending up through the enerating chamber and having a downwardly turned upper end arranged above the normal water level in said chamber, a portion of said steam pipe also extending along the bottom portion of the vsterilizing chamber and hav- CONRAD MEYER.
