Description
w. cHwABz. Wash-Stands.
Patented Dec. 15,1874.
ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OrFIon.
WILLIAM SCHWARZ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-STANDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,874, dated December 15,1874; application filed September 26, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM SCHWARZ, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Wash-Stand, of which the following is a speci fication:
The accompanying drawing represents a perspective view of my improved wash-stand.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
My invention consists of a bureau washstand which contains the parts enumerated, and so arranged as to be stored within the front doors and top lid of the same.
In the drawing, A represents the outer frame or casing of my improved wash-stand, which is provided with hinged front doors B, a hinged top lid, O, and abottom drawer, D. The lid 0 is thrown up against the wall, being lined at the inside with a sheet-metal or oil-cloth covering, so as not to be affected by the sprinkling of the water from the basin, and to protect, also, the wall from the unsightly effects of the same. The lid is held in open position by a springstandard, a, in the usual manner. A looking-glass, G, of suitable size, is hinged to the lid at such a point that, when swung up and retained in position by a baud-spring or catch, 1), it will be at convenient height for use. It is folded down on the lid when the same is to be closed. At the upper part of the wash-stand is arranged, back of a false drawer, E, the basin F and the water-receptacle G, and sidewise of the basin may be placed brackets, receptacles for the soap, tooth-brush, &c. The water-receptacle G is made of suitable sheet metal, with a hinged cover, G, and connected, by a pipe and stop-cock, d, with the basin, which is plugged in the usual manner, and
provided with an overflow, if desired. The basin empties its contents, after use, in a chamber-pail, H, beneath, which is equal in capacity to the water-receptacle, so that the same may be freely used, and the full pail be carried off to be emptied and refilled with a fresh supply of water for the receptacle. The space below the receptacle G is taken up by a hinged stand, I, with foot-rest I and a drawer, 1 for the blacking box and brushes.
The stand is swung in outward direction, and supported on front legs 0, to be at a level and at convenient height for the blacking of the boots.
The stand I is carried to the inside previous to the closing of the doors.
The drawer D at the bottom of the washstand is intended for storing miscellaneous articles, and may be opened independently of the other parts of the washstand.
When the front doors and lid of the washstand are closed the same has fully the appear ance of a bureau, and dispenses with the unsightly appearance of a separate wash set, pail, and blacking-stand, while saving space and increasing the neatness and comfort of the room.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The looking-glass G, hinged to the lid 0, and provided with band-spring b, as and for the purpose described.
2. The stand I, hinged in the cavity of washstand, and turning in and out, as specified. WILLIAM SOHWARZ.
