FOLDING PORTABLE SHOWER-BATH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,125, dated October 27', 1891.

Be it known that I, OSCAR F. GRANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Portable Shower-Baths; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

This invention has relation to bathing apparatus, and particularly to shower-baths, and has for its object the provision of a portable and folding shower-bath cabinet, which may be hung upon the wall of a bath-room above the tub, or otherwise supported, and which will contain under acompact and convenient arrangement all the appliances for shower-bathing, and, if desired, a variety of bath and toilet conveniences. The idea cont'emplated is to furnish a cheap and efficient shower-bath which will not require the large amount of extra plumbing now necessary,an apparatus that can be put up in any bath-room and supplied from the bath-cock by ineans of but little space and presenting a handsomeV instead of the usual unsightly appearance of the shower appliances in present use.

The invention consists in the novel con-V struction, coinbinations, and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of. a portable folding shower-bath cabinet embodying my invention, the cabinet being open, as when in use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the open cabinet with the curtains omitted. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a closed cabinet provided with shelves for the reception of toilet articles. A designates a wooden cabinet in the form of'a small closet, cupboard, or toilet-case of a rectangular form, and composed of a back a, the sides b b, top and bottom shelves c c', and the folding front (l. In the form of cabinet Shown in Figs. l, 2, 3, Il, and 5 the folding front d is hinged at its upper edge to the top shelf c, and when elevated is upheld by the folding braces E E, which are hinged to the back of the cabinet, and are formed with joints f, as in carriage-top braces, so as to become locked when straightened out. Upon the inner side of the door or folding front (Z is arranged a distributer or shower-head G, fitted upon the end of a pipe G', which is bent so as to project toward the side of the cabinet where it is connected, when necessary, with a rubber tube II, leading' to the bath-cock. lVhen desired, a permanent connection may be made with the water-supply and a balhjoint arranged at the point of connection with the pipe G.

M designates a rod or wire extending arou n d the edges of the folding front and running back tothe rear walls of the cabinet to which it is secured, a hinge being formed ou the rod about or nearly on aline with the front of the cabinet, as shown at g, so that therod or wire may be folded with the folding front. This rod or wire is designed for the receptionv of rubber curtains M2, which are supported by rings or hooks and may be drawn out when the shower is to be used. IVhen the cabinetis to be closed, the curtains are run back within the cabinet and rest on the stationary portions of the rod or wire M, thus keeping them suspended and allowing the door or folding front to be opened or closed freely. As the curtains are usually longer than the cabinet, they are folded over at their lower edges when the cabinet is closed, so'as to rest upon the lower shelf or bottom c', which may be slatted or perforated for the purposes of ventilation and for allowing the drip-water to escape.

`Within the cabinet `shelves or brackets inlayT be arranged to hold the sponge, brushes, dsc., while the outside of the cabinet may, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, be furnished with'shelves or brackets to hold a variety of toilet articles.

The folding front of the cabinet is conveniently made in the form of amirror, havinga reflecting-glass I set in a suitable panel.

latter is supported in position by a jointed brace P, hinged to the back of the cabinet, as shown. The curtain-support M consists of a Wire or metal rod frame similar to that shown in Fig. 5, butattached by means of a transverse bar r to the shower branch, so as to be raised and lowered thereby, instead of being raised and lowered by the folding of the front of the cabinet.

The curtains are supported by hooks instead of by rings, so that they can be pushed forward and backward without being obstructed by the transverse bar r.

As a new article of manufacture, a folding portable shower-bath cabinet consisting of a closet-like structure having a hinged folding front or door and provided with a folding shower-head or distrubuter and a folding ourtain-support, Which are contained Within the cabinet when the same is closed, substantially as described.
