'F. G. SANFORD. COMBINED BUREAU, WARDROBE AND WASHS'TAND.
Patented June 6,1876.
if; yiM wx In 06/21'07. m 7 6 WZln'wSeJ w W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK G. SANFORD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED BUREAUS, WARDROBES, AND WASH-STANDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,470, dated June 6, 1876; application tiled December 13, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK G. SANFORD, of New York city, county, and State, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toilet-Cabinets, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists in the combination of certain well-known hereinafter-specified household articles, forming a very useful and ornamental piece of furniture, which is specially adapted for use in hotels, private residences, and offices. Its principal objects are to promote the comfort of housekeepers, and to reduce the expenditure of money consequent on the purchase of the articles composing my cabinet separately.
' The following is a full description of my invention, reference being bad to the accompan yin g drawing.
A represents the base of the cabinet. The bureau B is furnished with a series of drawers, O, the uppermost of which being false to allow of the insertion of the basin D in the top of said bureau.. The pins of the slab E, which is, preferably, composed of marble, and of which the basin forms a part, enter grooves cut in the wardrobes N. F is the handle of a pump, which is concealed in a space left for the purpose between the drawers and the back of the cabinet. The pipes G connect the pump with a pair of water-reservoirs, H, placed in the closets I. K K are two faucets, from which the water is ejected when the pump is operated by means of the handle. The water from the basin will be conveyed through a waste-pipe, also concealed between the drawers and the back of the cabinet, to a tank in the compartment L, which latter will be spacious enough to hold besides said tank the chamber utensils. A towel-rack, M, slides in a space between one side of the bureau and one of the wardrobes N. Between the'bureau and the other wardrobe a board, 0, is hinged to the base at 0. This board supports on its inner surface a box, 0, which is intended for the blacking-of boots and shoes, the brushes and the blacking-box being put in the drawer 0 When not in use this board 0 will close the space P, its outer surface resembling that of the towel-rack M. The wardrobes N, which rise on both sides of the bureau, will contain hooks and shelves for the reception of clothes, &c. The shelves N are intended for books, and they may be of any desired number and design. The frame-work R, which carries the mirror S,is secured to the bureau in the usual way, and is also firmly connected to the wardrobes by braces. The boXes R which are secured to the frame R, and rest on the slab E, are'receptacles for toilet articles. R are brackets, which are also attached to the frame, and may, like the boxes, have any desired form.
The pumping apparatus may be of any preferred construction, and, if so desired, the handle and the faucets may be put in the guise of statuary, which will greatly enhance the beauty of my cabinet.
By this combination within a narrow compass of a bureau and mirror, washbasin, pump, and reservoirs, wardrobes and bookshelves, towel-rack, and boot-blacking apparatus, I produce a piece of furniture which combines elegance with usefulness and economy, and which meets a want heretofore unsupplied.
What I claim as .my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The toilet-cabinet composed of the combined wash-stand and bureau, the mirror, the wardrobes, the water-reservoir or reservoirs, and appliances for supplying the wash-basin with water from said reservoirs, the parts being arranged relatively substantially as specified.
2. The combination, substantially as specified, with the combined Wash-stand and bureau, of the sliding towel-rack, arranged in a recess on one side of the bureau. V
3. The combination, substantially as specified, with the combined wash-stand and bureau, of the blacking-box, carried on a swinging door covering a recess on one side of the bureau.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK G. SANFORD.
