ANTHONY MCOW'EN, OF NFFW YORK, N. Y.
BASIN OR BOWL ATTACHMENT FUR BATH-TUBS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,166, dated 'March 23, 1897.
Application filed April 13, 1896. derial No. 587,348. (No model.)
To (111/ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY MCOWEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Basin or Bowl Attachments for Bath-Tubs, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in basin or bowl attachments to bath-tubs; and it consists in the novel features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of the invention is to provide in connection with a bath-tub a basin or bowl which may be brought into position when desired for use and then folded out of the way when not in use.
In many bath-rooms there is insufficient space fora stationary washstand, and in such places my present invention is particularly useful, since it to a large measure takes the place of a stationary washstand and provides a basin which when in use is located directly over the bath-tub, where it will be out of the way and at the same time convenient of use.
The nature of the invention will be more fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter given, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical transverse section through a bathtub provided with the basin and its attachments constructed and arranged in accordance with and embodying the present invention, the basin being shown in two positions by full lines and in a third position by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a top View of same, the basin being shown in its horizontal position by full lines and in position to receive water from the faucet by dotted lines.
In the drawings, A'designates the bath-tub, which is of ordinary form and construction.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, B denotes the basin or bowl, having at one edge the flange C, and D represents a bracket to which, through intermediate devices, the said basin is secured. the circular form indicated at E in Fig. 1 and fits snugly over the rounded edge F of the bathtub, which edge acts as a support for the bracket and as a surface upon which the The bracket D has at one end,
rounded end E of the bracket D may turn axially, being there secured by means of the plate G, held in place by screws or bolts H. The form of the bracket D and plate G is more clearly illustrated in Fig. 2, while the outer curved end of saidbracket is clearly shown in Fig. 1. Thebracket D extends inward and has swiveled in bearings a a the lower ends of the links I) b, the upper ends of which are held in bearings c c, secured to a plate d, to which the basin B is pivotally' secured by means of the rivet or bolt 6, which passes through the flange O of said basin and through said plate cl, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
hen the basin B is turned downward into a position for use, it will extend horizontally over the bath-tub, and while over the bathtub is capable of two movements. hen the basin B is first turned downward over the bath-tub, the links I) b will be in their folded position down against the horizontal portion of the bracket D, this causing the basin to be in about the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. hen the basin is in this position, it may by means of its swivel e be turned sidewise to pass under the faucet f, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, to receive the water to be drawn therefrom. After the supply of Wm terhas entered the basin B the latteris turned back to its position in line with the bracket D and then elevated by being drawn upward and toward the front side of the bath-tub A to the position shown in Fig. 2, the links I) 1) during such movement turning upward into substantially a vertical position. The construction is such that the links cannot turn unduly toward the front side of the bath-tub, and hence when said links are turned upward they will maintain the basin B in the position in which it is shown by solid lines in Fig. 1 directly over the bath-tub and in a convenient place foruse. By reason of the fact that the basin B is swiveled to the plate 61 it may be turned laterally from alinement with the bracket D in order to attain the most con venient position for the user. hen it is desired to empty the basin B, a suitable stopper will be withdrawn from its lower surface in order to allow the water to escape. WVhen it is desired to elevate the basin B out of the way, it will first be pushed toward the inner side of the bath-tub in order to close the links b b downward against the horizontal portion of the bracket D, after which the said basin and bracket will be turned upward against the wall, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the curved end E of said bracket at such time turning upon the rounded edge F of the bath-tub. The basin B when turned upward may rest against the wall or against the front of an inclined closet I, which may be provided to receive the various articles connected with the bath.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The attachment for bath-tubs comprising the basin having the flange, combined with the bracket D which when in its lower position is horizontal over the bath-tub, means securing said bracket in a hinged manner permitting it to be turned upward, the plate 61 to which the flange of said basin is pivotally secured, and the links Z), Z), intermediate said plate cl and bracket D and which are adapted to be turned into a vertical position to support the basin in its elevated horizontal position for use and folded downward to a position substantially horizontal with the bracket D to lower the said basin to its lower horizontal position and also to permit the basin and its attachments to be compactly folded upward with said bracket D; substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The attachment for bath-tubs comprising the basin having the supporting-flange, combined with the bracket 1) which when in its lower position is horizontal over the bathtub, means securing said bracket in a hinged manner permitting it to be turned upward, and the links I), Z), intermediate the basinfiange and bracket D and which are adapted to be turned into a vertical position to support the basin in its elevated horizontal position for use and folded downward to a position substantially horizontal with the bracket D to lower said basin to its lower horizontal position and also to permit the basin and its attachments to be compactly folded upward with said bracket D; substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In combination with the bath-tub, the basin, the bracket D having the curved upper end fitting over the edge of the bath-tub, the plate G retaining said bracket upon the edge of said tub, the flange on said basin, the plate 61 to which said flange is pivoted and the folding links intermediate said plate and said bracket; substantially as set forth.
Signed at New York in the county of New York and State of New York, this 10th day of April, A. D. 1896.
ANTHONY MCOVEN.
