UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR HERMANN EBERT, OF HAMBURG, GERMANY.
APPARATUS FOR NlGHT-COMMODES.
sPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,546, dated April 18, 1893.
Application filed June 25, 1892. $e1ial No. 488,058. (No model.) Patented in Germany January 17, 1892, No. 65,332; in France January 30, 1892, No. 219,051; in Switzerland May 27, 1892, No. 5,178; in Belgium May 30, 1892, No. 99,891; in England June 8, 1892, No. 10,820; in Italy June 30, 1892, No. 32,072, and in Austria-Hungary September 28, 1892, No.
27,537 and No. 50,002.
To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, OSCAR HERMANN EBERT, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Hamburg, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Night-Oommodes and Chamber-Cupboards, (for which I have obtained patents in Germany, dated January 17, 1892, No. 65,332; in France, dated January 30, 1892, No. 219,051; in England, dated June 8, 1892, No. 10,820; in Italy, dated June 30, 1892, No. 32,072 in Austria-Hungary, dated September 28, 1892, No. 27,537 and No. 50,002; in Switzerland, dated May 27,1892, No.- 5,178, and in Belgium, dated May30, 1892, No. 99,891,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for night commodes and chamber cupboards; and it is designed to be fixed toa toilet, Wash stand, or similar furniture of the bedroom.
The object of the said invention is to present the utensil in the desired convenient position outside of and at a certain distance apart from the piece of furniture in order to facilitate the use of the utensil particularly by corpulent females. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated by way of example in connection with a night commode in which Figures 1 and 2 are two sectional side elevations of the invention, the former showing it closed and out of use and the latter opened and ready for use, while Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line w-x of Fig. 2.
Similar letters referto similar parts throughout the several views.
A basket or support I) provided with a handle Z) is preferably employed to receive the vessel a, which either rests byits upper flange or by its bottom on the support. At opposite sides of the latter are provided two rails 0 each having a vertical notch c for the reception of a stud e forming the free end of the downward directed foremost arm of a pair of lazy tongs d, d arranged so as to Work in a vertical plane. The free ends of both other foremost, but upward directed, arms of the lazy tongs are pivoted to the support b by rails c are adapted to carry the same when standing on the fioor of the room-see Fig. 2. The rear arms of each lazy tongs cl are pivoted by means of their center bolt f to a bracketg fixed to the back wall of the cupboard S and provided with a notch g which is designed to serve as a guide for the center bolt h laterally projecting beyond the last-but. one arm of the lazy tongs cl. The said notch is preferably somewhat curved or inclined to the front end as well as to the base plate of the bracket, so that the basket I) with the vessel a will not only occupy a comparatively lower position when drawn out of the commode as illustrated in Fig. 2, but will also be secured at its position of rest within the latter as illustrated in Fig. 1.
For admitting convenient sitting I am accustomed to line the upper edge of the vessel (1. with an annular pad or a wooden ring having a smoothly finished upper surface.
Having now fully described my said invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination witha commode or cabinet, of a pair of lazy tongs having one end secured within the commode a receiver or holder connected to the opposite end of said tongs and having supporting legs pivoted thereto provided with vertical guide slots a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with a commode or cabinet, of a pair of lazy tongs having one end secured within the commode, a receiver or holder connected to the opposite end, a handle for extending said tongs, supporting legs pivoted to the receiver and provided with vertical guide slots 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination with a commode or cabinet, of a pair of lazy tongs connected with the rear wall thereof and having at the outer ends a holder or receiver for a vessel, of guide arms operating on the lazy tongs to cause the same to move in a downward direction when being unfolded and in reverse direction when being folded for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination with a commode or cabinet and a pair of lazy tongs connected with the rear wall thereof and having at their outer Ullllyul. Ill-u 0"5 UCULL LUDL ULL llllU LLUUJ VY ILULL 7 A 7 unfolded 5nd in a reverse direction when be- OSCAR HERMANN EBERF ing folded, whereby said legs are raised clear Witnesses: of the floor of the commode, substantially as ALEXANDER SPEOHT, set forth.
