NITED STATES V PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES B. BASFORD, OF MALDEN, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF TWO- THIRDS TO JOHN W. DUNHAM, OF LIVEBMORE FALLS, MAINE, AND CHARLES H. DUNHAM, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMMODE ATTACHMENT FOR WASH-STANDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,168, dated December 11, 1883.
Application filed July 13, 1883. (No model.) i
To (LZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES B. BASFORD,
of Malden, in the county of Middlesex and" State of Massachusetts, haveinvented certain Improvements in Commode Attachmentsfor WV-ash -Stands, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention has for its object to provide an improved com mode attachment adapted for 1 use with a wash-stand or other'like' article of furniture, said attachment comprising an apertured seat, a support for a vessel, legs or supports for the seat, and pivoted links connecting the seat with the interior of the stand, whereby the seat is enabled to be wholly in closed in the stand or to be withdrawn therefrom and rest on its supports at the front of the stand, the links preventing the seat and vessel from tipping while in transit, and co- 0 operating with the supports in holding the attachment in an upright position when it is re moved from the stand, all of which I willnow proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a 2 part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view'of a Wash-stand provided -with my improved attachment. the same being shown in position for use. Fig. 2 represents an end view, showing by dotted lines the at- 0 tachment moved back into the stand.
The same lttters of reference indicate the same parts in both figures.
In the drawings, a represents a wash-stand having the usual receptacle, 1', under its top and a door. 22, covering said receptacle.
My improved attachment is composed of an apertured seat, 0, having a support, d, for a chamber-vessel, 6, legs or supports f f, adapted to rest on the floor and support the 0 seat, and two pairs of links or stiff metal rods, 9 g g g, which are pivoted at their opposite ends, respectively, to ear-s1; 1', attached to the seat, and ears 1" 13, attached to the interior of the stand a. It will be seen that saidlinks enable the seat to assume the position shown by dotted linesin Fig. 2, (the seat being wholly contained in the receptacle r,) and also to be moved outwardly, as shown in .Fig. 1, until the supports f f rest on the floor. The arrangement of the links in pairs,' as shown, keeps the seat and vessel in a level position at'all times, so that thereis little or no liability of spilling the contents of the vessel in moving it out or in. When the seat is moved out, as shown in Fig. 1, the links cooperate with the legsff in supporting the seat. I do not limit myself, however, to the employment of two links at each side of the seat, for a single link maybe employed at each side; but the seat would be liable to tip or work on its pivotal connectionswith the links; hence I pre for two links at each side, as shown.
It will be observed that when the seat isin position for use, it is elevated above the floor to such a height that it enables the user to sit 6 comfortably. i
What I claim is- 1. A commode attachment consisting of a holder for a chamber-vessel, having an apertured seat at the top, legs or supports at the bottom, brackets for attachment to interior of the wash-stand, and two links pivotally connected at each side to the holder and brackets.
as set forth, whereby the holder may be placed ally connected at each side to the holder and brackets, as described, whereby the holder may be placed within the receptacle or withdrawn for use, and the legs afford a support for it in either position, substantially as de scribed. 0 In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name.
to this specification, inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 11th day of July,
CHARLES E. BASFORD. Witnesses:
O. F. BROWN, T. T. MONULTY.
