Description

u wtoz Paten ed ar 3:
T.I' CARLOS INVALID'S SUPPORT.
mlhml W (No M del) UNTTE TATES LATENT OFFICE.
TIMOTHY F. CARLOS, OF TRENTON, NE\V JERSEY.
INVALIDS SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,894, dated March 3, 1896. Application filed September 25,1895. Serial No. 563,614. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TIMOTHY F. CARLOS, of Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ater Closet Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in water-closet attachments.
The object of the invention is to provide simple and inexpensive means for affording support to an invalid or other person while using a water-closet seat, thereby relieving them of all strain and enabling them to easily sit or rise without undue exertion.
A further object is to provide an attachment of this kind by which medicine, toiletpaper, and the like can be kept conveniently at hand and wearing-apparel can be suspended within reach.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View in perspective. Fig. 2 is a similar view, slightly enlarged, showing the connecting-support in position. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail. Fig. 5 is a similar View showing a slight modification.
Referring to the drawings, A A designate two supports, which I have shown as consisting of two rectangular boards a, suspended at their upper ends from a horizontal rod a, which latter can be secured to the wall of the water-closet or suspended from the ceiling thereof. Each board is shown as having a bail a with a central eye a to enable them to be moved toward or away from each other.
B B designate two loops or arm-rests, each of which consists of a strip of heavy canvas, leather, or the like attached at its upper end I) to the outside of one of the boards, its free end being provided with an eye or ring I), which is designed to engage with any one of a series of hooks Z2 secured to the board. By this means each loop can be lengthened or shortened to accommodate the different persons.
To the front longitudinal edges of these boards are secured hooks G, for supporting wearing-apparel thereon. The two boards supporting the adjustable loops are moved 5 5 to ward or away from each other to accommodate different users; but this does not materially vary, and they usually hang within a short distance of each other.
D is a leaf or support which is hinged or otherwise connected at one end to the lower end of board A, and at its other end is provided with hooks cl, designed to engage eyes cl of the other board, A, near the lower end thereof. WVhen this leaf or support is not It will be understood that changes may be made without departing from the scope of my invention--as, for instance, the two supporting members to which the loops or armrests are secured may be made of canvas,
leather, or any other suitable material, and
the leaf-support may be entirely dispensed with or used at pleasure,
Iclaim as my invention- 1. An attachment of the character herein described having two depending supports, a
loop or arm-rest for each of said supports having one'end rigidly secured, its other end being provided with an eye or ring, and series of hooks extending from said supports with which the said eyes or rings of said loops 0 or arm-rests are designed to engage, substantially as set forth.
2. An attachment of the character herein described having two depending members, a shelf or support between the lower said members and removably secured thereto, and adjustable loops or arm-rests attached to the outer sides of said members, as setforth.
3. An attachment of the character herein described having two dependingboards, loops 1 00 or arm-rests secured to the outer sides of said boards, a shelf or support pivotally connected A drawer 7o ends of to the inner side of one of said boards and designed to engage the inner side of the other board at its free end, as set forth.
4L. The combination with the suspendingrod, of the two depending members adjustable thereon, hooks on the front edges of said members, loops or arm-rests attached each at one end to one of said members, its other end being provided with an eye or ring, a series of hooks projecting from each of said members and with which said eyes or rings are designed to engage, and the shelf or support supported between the lower ends of said members, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
