P. P. TARDIS. COMBINED BABY CHAIR, SWING, AND GRIB.
No. 565,047. Patented Aug. 4, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PATRICK PIERRE TARDIS, OF ANTHONY, RHODE ISLAND.
COMBINED BABY-CHAIR, SWING, AND CRIB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 565,047, dated August 4, 1896.
Application filed April 20,1896. Serial No. 588,248. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PATRICK PIERRE TAR= DIS, of Anthony, in the State of Rhode Island, have made acertain new and useful Combined Baby-Chair, Swing, and Crib; andI do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my combined device. Fig. 2 is a rear view of same, discarding the special frame and utilizing the doorway. Fig. 3 shows the device removed from its suspended position and used as a chair. Fig. 4 shows the same used as a crib.
The object of my invention is to facilitate the care of young children by those who are unable to procure help to assist them in so doing, and who are also necessarily devoted to other employment during a considerable portion of the day 5 and it consists in the combination, arrangement, and operation of devices as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, A, Fig. 1, is a frame which rests upon the floor and is provided with long feet 13 and braces G, which prevent it from tipping over or becoming unsteady.
D is a cross-bar connecting the upper ends of the side frame, having upon the under side two hooks E E.
F is a chair having a long vertical rod upon either side, loops or eyes G G being attached to the upper ends, which correspond to the hooks E E.
The chair F is constructed with a retainingbar H, connecting the ends of the arms and secured by a hook, the retaining-bar having upon the top a small shelf or table I. The back of the chair J is hinged to the bottom and maybe let down into nearly ahorizontal position, as shown by dotted lines, Fig. 1, and is there sustained by a jointed rod K upon either side.
N is a catch on the top of the back of the chair, which engages with a pin 0 upon the under side of the top cross-bar of the chairback.
L is a movable slotted finger attached to the frame, and may be used to retain the chair in a fixed upright position whenever desired, as shown in Fig. 2.
With my invention as herein described and shown in Fig. 1 the child may be placed in a sitting posture and retained in its place by the cross-bar H, and may receive its food upon the shelf I. With the removal of the finger L and a slight push the chair will continue to swing for several minutes without again touching it. Whenever it is desired to put the child to sleep, the back J may be let down, as shown by dotted lines, Fig. 1, and the child placed upon suitable bedding therein, and the swinging movement may again be resorted to.
Instead of the frame described, the chair may be suspended in an ordinary doorway, as shown in Fig. 2, with the same result.
The chair may also be used upon the floor, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, to retain the child either in sitting or reclining posture.
'What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a combined chair and crib, the combination, with a frame, the top bar of which is provided with hooks, of a chair, the top of the back of which is provided with eyes for removably engaging with the hooks, a retainingbar hinged in the front of the chair above the seat, and the back of the chair hinged to the rear edge of the seat, a catch upon the top of the back, a pin in the frame of the back adapted to be engaged by the catch, and hinged links secured to the frame and to the hinged portion of the back, substantially as set forth.
