COMBINED CHAIR, SWING, AND JUMPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 3, 1914.
Application filed February 15, 1918. Serial No. 748,622.
To all whom it may concern Be it known t at I, AUGUST 0. Serena, a citizen of the United States, residin at East St. Louis, in the county of St. l lair and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Chairs, Swings, and Jumpers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined high chair, swin and jumper for the use of babies or young children, the object of the invention bein to rovide a device of this character ca a le 0 being attached to the back of an or inary chair to form a high chair, and of bein folded into small compass so that it may e packed or stored away in a suitcase or other suitable receptacle.
A further object of the invention is to provide an article of this character which may be readily and conveniently employed as a swing or baby jumper, capable of being suspended from the suspending means of the baby jumpers commonly employed, and which embodies suspencing means ada ted to support the chair seat in a perfect y horizontal position.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a folding article of the character specified which embodies means for holding t e outfolded seat rigid with the back section, and maintaining the seat in a proper position for use when the device is supported from an ordinary chair; and furt er to provide an arm rest or tray section which may be detached from the device when occasion re uires.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference bein had to the accompanying drawings, in w ich:--
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device sup ortcd for use as a swing or baby iumper. ig. 2 is a similar view showing the device as attached to a chair to form a high chair. Fig. 3 is a view showing the device folded for storage or transportation. Fig. 4 is a rear elevational view of the device. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail sections on the lines 5-5 and 66 of Figs. 2 and 8 respectively. 7
In carrying my invention into practice, I provide a chair comprising a back section 1 with a seat section 2, constructed in whole or art of wood or other suitable material.
hese two sections are united by hinges 3,
adapting the section 2 to be swung upward parallel with the section 1. or down\vm'dl to a position at right angles thereto. The members of the hinges 3 are provided with transverse openings 4 adapted to register when the seat section 2 is let down, so that a rod or pin 5 may be extended therethrough to lock the seat section rigid with the back section, thus preventing the jar from collapsing or the parts thereof ctting out of proper operative position. The section 1 is provided on opposite sides of its center and adjacent its opposite side edges with bearing members 6 in which are journaled the stems of suspending hooks '7 adapted to be engaged with the upper edge of the back of an ordinary chair to support the device therefrom when employed as a high chair, as shown in Fig. 2. These hooks 7 are provided with sleeves 8 of rubber or other suitable material to prevent marring of the furniture.
Hinge brackets 9 are secured to the front of the back section 1 adiacent the side edges thereof and are provided at their upper ends with hinge members 10 occupying slots 11 in a back section and to which are pivotally connected the bifurcated inner ends 12 of side arms or brackets 13, adapted to support an arm rest or tray 14. This arm rest or tray may be employed to hold the child in gosition within the seat, or to support foo toys, etc. As shown, the arms 13 are provided with supporting extensions 15 on which the ends of the tray 14 rest, and are formed with projections 16 overhanging the inner ends of said extensions to hold the tray against upward displacement. The extensions are adapted to pass through flaring keepers 17 on the lid or tray and to be engaged by pivoted hooks or catches 18 on the tray, said hooks operating to draw the extensions inward and hold the same bound. against the inner walls of the contracted ends of the keepers, thus firmly holding the lid or tray in position, while ermitting of its detachment when OCCtlSlOn requires. Slots 19 are provided in the back section 1 for the passa e of confining straps 20, by which the chil may be confined against possibility of falling when the device is in use as a high chair or as a swing or jumper.
Pivotally attached to the under side of the forward portion of the seat section 1 adjacent the side edges thereof are apertured brackets 21, which may be turned inwardly to an inoperative position or outwardly to a laterally projecting operative position. These brackets are adapted to receive hooks 22 upon the lower ends of front suspending cords 23 having similar hooks 24 at the upper ends thereof. Shorter rear suspending cords 25 are employed for coo eration with the front suspending cords an are provided with looped lower ends 26 to engage the suspending hooks 7. The hooks 24: and 27 of the front and rear suspending cords are adapted to be engaged with eyes 28 at the front and rear cm s of a pair of spring supporting rods 29, the intermediate portions of which are provided with coils 30 engaging the terminal journals or reduced portions 31 of a hanger rod or bar 32, having screw eyes 33 at its ends for attachment to suitable suspending devices, such as the suspending devices ot an ordinary baby jumper, whereby the device may be supported as shown in Fig. 1 for use either as a swing or baby jumper.
It will be understood that in the use of the device as a swing, the spring suspending rods 29 may have pivotal motion on the journals 31, while the arms of these rods are adapted to yield freely to adapt the device for use as a baby jumper, in which action the chair and spring arms have a straight up and down motion. It will be observed that the suspendingedevices, constructed and arranged as descri (1, will support the seat section of the chair in a horizontal position, thus obviating liability of the chi d bein thrown out and insuring safety under a conditions.
When the device is employed as whi h chair attachment for ordinary chairs, t e
suspendin elements are, of course, detached and the chair hooked upon the backof an ordinary chair or any other suitable support, as shown in Fi 2.
It will be observed that the construction described adapts the lid or tray to be employed or not as required, and also adapts the seat and back sections to be folded in parallel relation, so that the device may be packed in close compass for storage or transportation. Chains or other flexible connections 34 couple the side arms to the seat section whereby when the lid or tray is folded up against the back section, motion will be communicated to the seat section to fold it simultaneously against the back section.
I claim A device of the character described embodying a back section and a seat section, a lid or tray section, keeper members on the lid or tray section having flaring passages, arms connected with the back section and having ta ered tongues adapted to project through tie tapered passages of the keeper members and formed at their extremities with shoulders, said arms being provided with projections overhangin the tongues and engaging the edge of the lid or tray section so as to over-lap the same at the side opposite the side on which the tongues are arranged, and spring latches on the lid or tray section to interlock with the shouldered extremities of the ten ues.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature two witnesses.
