Specification of Letters Patent.

Application medaugust at, 1913. Serial no. 787,437.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES S. U. ROCK, a subject of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bath- Shower, of which the following 1s a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to plumbing and has particular reference to shower bath apparatus. a
Among the objects of the lnv'ention is to provide a bath shower of an unusually simple and reliable construction, occupying a minimum amount of space and requiring the least amount of manipulation to bring it into or throw it out of action.
A further object of the invention is to devise an apparatus of the character mentioned which dispenses with the necessity for I a hood or apron to prevent splashing of the water over the bathroom floor.
Another object of the invention is to so arrange the bath shower as to provide for a portion thereof to be utilizedas a towel rack.
The foregoing and other objects of the invention will hereinafter be more fully described'and claimed and illustrated in the drawings forming a part of this specification in which like characters-of reference indicate corresponding pafrtsin all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a conventional form ofbathtub with my improved bath shower arranged in operative position in connection therewith; Fig. 2 IS a plan 'view of the showfe-rport'ionof the device; Fig. 3 is a. vertical section on the line 33 of Fig. 2, showing the relation of the spraying nozzle to the bathtub and also indicating the direction of the jets of water with respect to thetub and indicating in dotted lines the position which the said nozzle occupies when out of use; and Fig. 4 1s a detail of the joint between the relatively stationary and movable parts of the tubing.
hot and cold water inlets 11 and 12.
The bath shower comprises two principal parts of tubing shown at 13 and 1 1. The tubing 13 is relatively stationaryv and is ournaled upon a horizontal axis in a bracket 15 which is adapted to be secured in a ermanent position on the vertical wall at t e rear of the bathtub. Said bracket 15 is preferably made of strap metal bent in the form shown in Fig. 3 for simplicity and neatness of appearance. The bearing 15, however, of the bracket provides for rotation of the pipe 13 under certain conditions. Said pipe 18 has one end 13 extending downwardly and adapted to be connected to the delivery nozzle 16 into which the hot and cold water lines lead; Upon detaching the connection 13, the pipe 13 will be free to rotate sufli- .ciently in the bearing 15 toallow the end 13 to drop against the side of the bathtub.
The nozzle portion of the tubing shown at 14 is substantially U-shaped, one leg of which is connected in horizontal alinement with the pipe 13. This leg of the nozzle isjournaled in a bracket 17 having a bearing 17' preferably of the same character as the aforesaid bracket 15. The adjacent ends of the pipes 13 and 14 are connected bya sleeve'or collar 18 having one end permanently secured as by screw threads to the in, let end of the nozzle 14 and having its other end connected to the delivery end of "the pipe 13 in any suitable substantially watertight manner but providing for relative rotation between the parts. A pin 19in the form of a screw is tapped through the end of the pipe 13 adjacent the collar 18' and is so arranged as to be struck by a shoulder 18 of the collar when the U-shaped nozzle 14 as a whole occupies a substantially horizontal plane. This manner of connectingthe nozzle 14 to the pipe 13 provides for the nozzle to be turned up and back against the wall, as shown in Fig. 3 in dotted lines, when not in use, and yet leaving that'portion or thetulo in}: between the brackets 15 and 17 in a horizontal and substantially stiff position and at a convenient elevation for use as a towel fore, which may be formed upon or discharged from said nozzle will drip within the tub. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the nozzle 14: is provided .with perforations on its inner surface arranged preferably in two series 14 and 14 The series 14 lie in a plane coincident with the axis of the nozzle and the other series 14* lie in a plane parallel to the first mentioned plane and below the same when the device is in use. These perforations are formed radially through the wall of the nozzle and hence direct the streams of water, as shown in Fig. 3, from any point of the nozzle across toward the opposite side of the tub or toward the bottom, the streams 14 from the upper perforations crossing each other at points substantially at the height of the persons shoulders.
- The spray, therefore, is all directed within the tub and renders the use of a curtain or apron unnecessary for the purposes of this invention. As indicated in Fig. 2, the ends preferably closed of the nozzle 14 may be provided with additional perforations for the purpose of in- "creasing the amount of spray at these laces,
as, for instance, when the person Wis es to apply the shower to his head he has but to lower his head, bringing it under the augmented spray or shower atthe place indicated at 14?. The extreme end of the nozzle 14, or that end, op osite the collar 18, is y means of a screw threaded plug 20.
,Having thus described my invention, I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a bath shower, the combination of a relatively stationary pipe having a horizontal portion above the bathtub, a. nozzle having one portion thereof in longitudinal alinement with said horizontal portion of the pipe, a movable jointconnecting the ad jacent ends of said pipe and nozzle permitting the nozzle to be rotated around the axis of said pipe, means to support thepipe and nozzle in position above the bathtub, and
means to limit said rotation ofthe nozzle in a downward direction, said nozzle being 1 provided with spra mg means directed toward the interior 0 the tub.
2. In a bath shower, the combination with ing a bathtub and means to deliver water into the same, of a water pipe adapted to be condisconnected therefrom, said pipe havin a horizontal portion above the tub, a brac et supporting the pipe and having a bearing with a horizontal axis permitting the pipe to have a certain degree of rotation therein, a nozzle having one portion in alinement with the horizontal pipe portion, a movable joint connecting the same, a second bracket having a bearing in alinement with the first mentioned bearing and serving to support the nozzle so that it may rotate with respect to the first mentioned pipe, said nozzle berovided with perforations leading there rom into the tub, and means to close the end of the nozzle remote from the movable joint aforesaid.
3. In a bath shower, the combination with a relative stationary water pipe having a horizontal end, of a stop pin secured in said pipe end, a U-shaped sprayingnozzle having one leg supported in alinement with the horizontal end-of said pipe, and a collar secured to the end of said leg adjacent the pipe constituting a watertight connection between the two parts, said collar having a shoulder adapted to impinge against said pin to limit the U-shaped nozzle in a horizontal position, substantially as set forth.
4. In a bath shower, the combination of a water pipe mounted in fixed supports above the bathtub, a nozzle constitutin a continuation of said pipe and extending thence around one end of the bathtub and serving to spraywater received from the pipe toward the center of the bathtub, means to connect said pipe to the water supply, said nozzle being movable around the axis of said pipe, and stop means to limit the movement of the nozzle and maintain it in normal horizontal operative position. a
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presenceOf two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES S. C. ROCK.
