Description
M. ABRAHAM AND L. J. DENNIS.
BATHTUB.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 21. 1921.
Patented (Pat. M, 1921.,
BATHTUB.
Application filed January 21, 1921.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that we, MICHAEL ABRAHAM and LEONARD J. DENNIS, subjects of the King of Great Britain, and residents of Toronto, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bathtubs; and we hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
Our invention relates to bathtubs and its object is to provide a bathtub ha ving a novel water supplying channel near its upper edge.
e invention provides a tub having an S- shaped bend in its side walls near the top thereof, the upper concave side of this bend forming an open overflow water channel and for supplying water to this channel from the ordinary water supply attachments of the tub, which channel will enable water to be applied all around to the sidewalls of the tub to take the chill off the walls preparatory to a bath, and to cleanse the tub after bathe will explain the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate one practical construction of tub embodying our invention and set forth in the claims the novel constructions and combinaitibn of parts for which protection is desire In the accompanying drawings;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of part of a tub embodying our invention showing the overflow channel and the general arrangement of the water supply connections.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section through one side of the tub-on the line 2-2 Flg. 1.-
Fig. 3 pipe.
As shown in said drawings the tub 1 may be of any desired material and form. This tub however is provided near its top with a preferably S-shaped bend 1 which preferably extends entirely around the tub. As shown the upper concave side of this bend forms an open water holding channel 2 around the inside of the tub-and the outer side wall of the channel rises above the inner side wall thereof and is turned outwardly as at 3 forming the top flange of the tub. This construction enables the entire interior surface of the walls of the tuband of the chanml 2 to be readily enameled when the tub is is a detail of the water supplying Specification of Letters Patent.

made of metal sion thereof.
Surrounding the tub adjacent the overflow channel 1 and underneath flange 3 is a water supply pipe 4 which is connected with the hot and cold water supply faucets 6 and 7 whlch may be of the usual type as will be readily understood. The water supply pipe 4 belng practically concealed under the flange 3 is not unsightly. This pipe 4 may around the tub if desired,
to prevent rusting or corroand which are adapted to project through related openings in the outer side wall of the channel 2. These Ts are preferably internally threaded and are engaged by screw nipples 8 which are threaded into the Ts from the inslde of the tub and a packing 8 is interposed between the flange 8 on the inner end of the nipple and the inner wall of the chan nel, so as to make water tight joints therewith, as indicated in Fig. 2.
Preferably the apertures in the nipples 8 are of varying diameters, the apertures in the nipples nearer the water supply faucets 6 and 7 being made smaller than those farthest removed from the faucets so that water will be supplied practically uniformly to the channel around the tub. A drain 9 may be provided for the channel as indicated in 1g. 3 so that the channel can be drained when desired and kept clean and dry when the tub is not in use.
e prefer to make this tub of cast iron and enamel same. The tub with the overflow channel can be readily cast in one piece casting. The bores of the nipples 8 are preferably made conical to prevent spraying or squirting of the water over the overflow channel into the tub.
When the water is turned on the channel 2 will first be filled and then the water will overflow the inner wall of this channel and rundown the inner sides of the tub. If of course the side walls will be warmed uniformly, as the water will overflow uniformly from the channel when the tub is properly set. After the tub has been used the sides of the tub may be easily flushed and cleansed by flushing the channel with hot water, the channel overflowing as will be obvious. This construction enhances the comfort of the bather, equally warms the entire tub and facilitates washing down the sides of the tub.
We avoid spraying water into the tub by Patented @ct. ll, 192i.
is provided at intervals with Ts 4 using the conical bored nipples to reduce the pressure, and allow the channel to fill evenly; and this channel holds a body of warm water which overflows around the entire side walls of the tub and quickly warms the walls thereof without having to fill the tub to do so; this renders the tub most useful for delicate persons and invalids.
The overflow channel is visible and readily accessible and forms a convenient receptacle, for sponges, cloths, soap, etc. while the bathtub is in use; and is not unsightly; and is entirely hygienic as it can be as readily cleansed or wiped out as the tub.
The tub presents a more attractive appearance because the channel enhances the width of the top of the tub and imparts a more massive and substantial appearance to the tub.
What we claim is:
1. A bathtub having the upper part of its wall bent to form an overflow channel extending around the top of the tub, said channel being open at top, and the outer wall of the channel extending above its inner wall and means for admitting water to said channel; whereby the walls of-the tub may be warmed by hot water overflowing from the channel without. having to fill the tub, and whereby the walls may be flushed after the tub has been used, substantially as described.
2. A bathtub as set forth in claim 1 having a water supply pipe exterior to the tub and surrounding said channel below the top flange, and connections between .said pipe and said overflow channel extending through the wall of the tub and the outer side of the channel.
3. A bathtub having the upper part of its wall formed with an outwardly extending approximately S-shaped bend, said bend extending around the top of the tub and forming an open water holding flushing channel, the outer side wall of this channel extending above the channel and inner wall thereof andhaving an outwardly and downwardly flared portion at its top forming the top flange'of the tub, the channel lying within the said top flange and the top of the channel being in a plane below said flange and means for admitting water to said channel; whereby the walls of the tub may be warmed by hot water owrflowing from the channel without having to fill the tub; and whereby the walls may be flushed after the tub has been used. substantially as described.
4. In combination with a bathtub as set forth in claim 3; a water supply pipe exterior to the tub and surrounding the channel below the top flange; and a plurality of water inlet connections between said )ipe and said channel, said inlets exten ing through the outer wall of the channel.
5. In combination with a bathtub as set forth ir claim 3; a. water supply pipe exterior to the tub and surrounding the channel and beneath the top flange, a plurality of Ts connecting said pipe and the channel and extending through the outer wall of the channel; and nipples in the channel engaging said Ts and securing the pipe in position; substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we aflix our'signatures.
