BATHTUB.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pgatgnted Aug 22 1g22 Application filed March 14, 1921. Serial No. 452,272.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, THoMAs 'J. SWIFT, acitizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bathtubs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will. enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in bath tubs, and has for its object to provide such a tub that has all of the features of an ordinary bath tub, a shower bath, a foot bath and a sitz bath.
from the front to the back thereof.
To the above end,the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. l is a side elevation of bath tub;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same;
Fig.3 is a plan view with some parts the improved shown in different positions, by means of broken lines;
Fig. 4 is a view principally in central vertical section taken on the line4-4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is a view in horizontal section taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 4, with some parts broken away to expose underlying parts and certain other parts being displaced.
The improved bath tub, as shown, is a monolithic structure and may be porcelain, enameled cast iron, or other suitable material. The general shape of the bath tub is cylindrical and has an open top with a side opening extending part way down from said top to afford an entrance passageway 7, below which is a basin 8. At its lower end, the bath tub is slightly expanded and provided with a depending supporting flange 9 afl'ording tl erewithin a hollow base 10. The basin 8, in front of the entrance passageway 7, has a radial. extension 11, which increases the width of the bath tub The base flange 9 also follows the general contour of the extension 11. Said extension 11 is proportion.
vided with double walls spaced to afi'ord therebetween a compartment l2,which opens intotlie base 10 for water supply pipes and the drain conduit 13, from the inside of the basin 8, is a plurality of overflow openings 15. In each side of the flange 9 is-a hand hole 16 normally closed by 'a sectionl? of said flange, and which section is held in place by screws 18.
Extending into the base 10, at the backthereof, are hotand cold water supply pipes 19 and 20, respectively. These pipes 19 and 20 extend horizontally forward in the base 10-to' the compartment 13, and thence. ver
ti'cally upward in said compartment and l are connected by a pipe 21. interposed in Leading from the pipe 21 is a depending pipe 23, which also extends horizontally through the base 10 t0 the re'arthereof and is connected to thelower end of-a-stand pipe i 24 imbedded in thelback wall of the bathtub and extended through the top thereof.
Swiveled on the upper end of the standpipe 24 is a goose neck 25, having on its free end a shower head 26, which may be positioned axially over the bath tub or upper and lower tended body-spraying arms 28 tapped into the stand pipe 24. and having a multiplicity of circumferentiall spaced perforations 29, which register with perforationsi30 in the inner wall of the bath tub.
swung to one side thereof,- as' in'dicate'd by 1 broken lines in Fig. 3. A cut-ofi' valve 27' is interposed in the oose neck 25. Also imbedded in the wal s of the bath tub are pairs of horizontally ex- Interposed in the pipe 23, just below the pipe 21,- is a branch pipe 31'havin'g a cutoff valve 32, which controls a discharge opening 33 at the bottom of the basin 8 and is provided for filling said tub. Also interposed in the pipe 23, just below the branch pipe 31, is a cut-off valve 34, the handle of 80 each pipe 19 and 20, near its upperiend, is a cut-offvalve 22 having. its'ope-rating' handle 'on the outside of the extension 11 said drain conduit, is constantly open.
which, together with the handle of the valve 32, is located on the outer wall of the extension 11.
The upper drain closed, at will, by a stopper, 35, and a trapequipped drain pipe 36 leads from the lower drain passageway 14:, which, together with removable seat 37 is supported on lugs 38 formed with the inner walls of the body 7 at the back thereof, and which seat has, at its front, a rolled edge 39, and at its back, a depending flange 40 arranged to engage sai lugs to hold the seat from sliding forward thereon. g
It may be assumed that all of the valves of the bath tub are closed and, by opening the two valves 21, a supply of hot and cold passageway may be will be basin 8.
The above described bath tub, as will be noted, occupies very little space, is easy to keep clean, for the reason that there are no sharp corners, and the-rough plumbing; is
immediately drained from the A. all concealed and may be very easilyinstopper 35 maybe removed so that the water spected or worked on through the hand holes.
What I claim is A self-contained, upright, cylindrical,
d monolithic bath tub having a radial extension of less width than the diameter of said tub and terminating below the top thereof to provide an entrance, said tub having a hollow base and said radial extension comprisingspaced front and rear walls providing a compartment communicating with said hollow base for the installation of water supply fittings, whereby the controls for said fittings may be positioned on said outer.
wall of said radial extension and adapted I for operation outside of said'tub, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofl aflix my signature.
