Patented .luly 26, 1932 UNTD STATES ERNEST L. NORBERG, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA LAVATORY Application :filed March 30,1931. Serial No. 526,160.
My invention relates to toilet apparatus and more particularly it relates to a novel dental lavatory or a wash basin which is adapted to serve as a cover for the liush tank of a toilet bowl.
Heretofore, in equipping bath rooms and the like, it has been customary to supply only one wash basin and the users of the bath room have been compelled to use the same basin l0 for washing purposes that others use for brushing their teeth and for gargling. Such conditions are unsanitary and unless the basin is kept immaculate at all times, there is danger of contracting contagious diseases. In some instances a separate throatand dental lavatory is provided, but the cost `'of such equipment is prohibitive except in elaborate installations.
It is a general object of my invention to rovide a basin which can be disposed over the ilush tank of a toil-et and which utilizes the overflow pipe of the tank'as a drain.
Another obj ect is to provide a basin which is adapted to be supported by the iiush tank of a toilet and which has a shape such that the position of the toilet does not interfere with the use of the basin.
Another object is to provide a basin of the character described which serves as a cover i 3D for the flush tank.
H attained in the embodiments of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of an installation embodying the principles of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view showing the flush tank and basin of my invention in cross section.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4c is a plan view of a modification.
In its preferred form my invention comprises a basin which is adapted to be supported by the flush tank of a toilet and which serves as a cover for the flush tank. An outlet is provided for the basin which utilizes the overflow pipe of the flush tank for a drain and if desired, an overflow conduit can be provided for the basin which also communicates directly with the overflow pipe of the flush tank. If desired, the basin can be provided with a protective back whichis adapted to be secured to the wall on which the flush tank is mounted kby means of a removable spout, which spout also serves to deliver Water to the basin. The basin can have a shape such that the forward portion of the basin is oilset romfthe line of the toilet so that the positionoi the toilet does not interfere in any way with the use of the basin or, if desired, the outline of the basin can have a contour which permits easy access to the basin from either sidev of the toilet.
lhile the basin of my invention is'particularly suitable for a dental ,lavatory and thus can serve as an auxiliary Xture in conjunction ywith the main wash basiny or' an installation, the invention is not limited to such use. It may be desirable in close'quar ters, for example, to utilize the basin of my invention as the main'basin or as the sole basin of the installation.
Referring now to the drawing, I. have shown a toilet bowl 16 adapted to be flushed by water supplied from a flush tank 17. lThe water in the flush tank 17 is adapted tobe replenished bythe action' of a suitable loat valve (not shown) or its equivalent, in accordance with the usual practice for such installations.
Anoverow pipe 18 is provided for precluding` the water in the tank yfrom exceeding a level which is above the upper or open end of the overflow pipe. A Hush' E valve 19 controls the flow of water from the tank 17 into the toilet bowl 16 and is adapted to be operated by suitable linkage (not shown) actuated by a handle 21'conveniently placed on or near the Hush tank. 1When the water in the tank 17 rises to the top of the overiow pipe 16, due to leakagek inthe supply valve or from any other cause, any further rise in the level of the water is prevented, since the excess water is carried away 100 through the pipe 1S and has clearpassage through a fitting 22 into the bowllG.
Over the top of the flush tank 17 andserving as a cover therefor l provide a basin 23. The basin E23 is preferably provided with a protective and sanitary back Q4 and a spout 26 for delivering wat-er to the basin under the control of the faucctsQi' and 28 preferably passes through the back The spout 26 is preferably made removable, as by providing a threaded connection 29 between the spout and the delivery pipe extending from the faucets 527 and Q8. A suitable rose 3l can be secured to the spout 26 which serves to enO'aO'e the back and tliereb firinl retain the basin on the tank 1T and against the wall 32.
A suitable outlet 33 adapted to be closed the basin andV an overflow conduit 35 can` extend between overflow ports EST in the basin to a point near the outlet 33. The outlet from the basin communicates directly with the overflow'pipe 1S and to preclude any of the contents of the basin from discharging into the water 3S in the tank 1'?, a conduit 39 can be provided from the outlet which extends for a short distance into the mouth of the overflow pipe. Thus, the entire discharge of the basin is delivered directly into the overflow pipe 1S and into the toilet bowl 16 without in any way contaminating the water in the flush tank 17, which for sanitary reasons and to preventl clogging of the sys teni must be kept fairly olea f The conduit 39 extending into the overflow pipe 18 is preferably of smaller diameter than the mouth of the overflow pipe so that it does not interfere with the normal function of the overflow pipe. lf desired, the mouth of the overflow pipe can be flared outwardly, as shown, thereby permitting the use of a discharge conduit 39 of larger diameter.
ln the embodiment of the invention illusytrated in Figs. 1 to 3, the basin Q3 has a semi-circular shape, thereby enabling convenient access to the basin from either side of the toilet and the position of the toilet does not seriously interfere with standing room adjacent 'the basin.
If desired, the basin can have a semiliexagonal or semi-octagonal outline thereby presenting a rectilinear surface toward a person standing Von either side of the basin. HIn the modification illustrated in Fig. 4, for example, I have shown one forinof basin having a shape suoli that it presents a rectilinear surface toward the user. In this modification,
'fr however, the front of the toilet bowl 1G is oli- Y set from theV front of the basin 41. It will be noticed that the edge, 42 of the basin makes an acute angle with a vertical plane lying perpendicular to the front of the `toiletbowl, in-
` dicated by the dot-anddash line in Fig. Lhand thus there is no interference with the stand-V ing room in front of the basin.
From theV foregoing theV advantages of my novel basin will be apparent. The basin can be substituted for theV basin heretofore coininonly employed or it can be used as an auX-V iliary dental lavatory in conjunction with the main basin ofthe installation. By employing the overflow pipe of the flush tank as a drain," extra plumbing is avoided and the trap 1. ln a flush tank for a toilet bowl, an overiiow pipe for precluding` the water in the tank from exceeding a predetermined level, a cover for said flush tank, said cover being in the form of a basin, an outlet at the bottom of the basin, said outlet communicating directly with said overflow pipe, and said cover having an outline which presents at least one reef tilinear edge making an acute angle with a vertical plane lying perpendicular to the front of the toilet bowl, whereby the toilet bowl does not interfere with the use of the basin.
2. A toilet bowl, a 'flush tank disposed directly behind said toilet bowl, a cover for said flush tank, and a wash basin in said cover, said wash basin having a front edge which makes an acute angle with the vertical plane passing through the line of centers of said toilet bowl and said flush tank, whereby said toilet bowl presents no interference with the standing room of a user of the basin.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand. Y
ERNEST L. NORBERG.
