Description

May 3, 1938. A. EHRHARDT SANITARY BASIN AND THE LIKE Filed Dec. 1, 1936 Patented May 3, 1938 PATENT OFFICE SANITARY BASIN AND THE LIKE Adolf Ehrhardt, Hamburg, Germany, assignor to Triton Belco A. G., Hamburg, Germany Application December 1, 1936, Serial No. 113,708 In Germany December 6, 1935 2 Claims.
This invention refers to sanitary basins, such as bidets, gargling bowls, and the like, having an internal circumferential hollow collar on or near their upper edge through which water flows. The
5 object of the invention is an arrangement by which the danger of dirty water being sucked back into the main supply for clean water is prevented. For this purpose in the hitherto known devices special airing valves (pipe interruptors,
and the like) are inserted in the water supply fittings attached to the basin. An absolutely secure interruption of the water column streaming back in the case of a suck back is, however, only incompletely attained by such air admitting valves and the like, whereas, in the plurality of cases leakages will be formed due to the sensitive adjustment and manner of operation of such air valves, whereby the success aimed at is rendered illusory.
The present invention in a simple manner abolishes the aforedescribed drawbacks by providing a possibility for the admission of air within the basin itself, without any particular air admitting valve being used. For this purpose in the sanitary basins according to the invention the conduit connecting the backward portion of the basin, forming a hollow space, and the circumferential hollow collar are provided with a delivery opening arranged at a certain distance above the hollow collar. On the other hand the water supply fittings arranged within said rearward portion possess discharge openings placed at a certain height above the aforesaid opening, the sum of the cross sections of these discharge openings being smaller than the cross section of the conduits mouth. The hollow collar is, moreover, provided with a fan-shaped rinsing shell for flushing purposes, leading into the basin, said opening being arranged at the place farthest away from the water supply.
This arrangement offers the advantage that with simple fittings being used an automatic airing of the water supply pipe is obtained. Furthermore it enables every user to wash himself with running water, either cold or heated up to any desired temperature, without requiring any further fittings, such as reversing valves and the like. Besides the circumferential collar of the basin is warmed up, and the basin is flushed.
The illustrations show a preferred construction of the device according to the invention, when used as a bidet- Fig. 1 being a vertical cross-section of the bidet along the line A-B of Fig. 2 which latter is a top view of it.
In the drawing a designates the main body of the sanitary basin with its elevated and hollow rearward portion 1), the circularly arranged hollow collar .0 and the connecting conduit d. Said connecting conduit d is provided with an outlet 5 e placed above the rolled collar 0 at the vertical distance h. A'fan-shaped rinsing shell g is provided within the hollow collar 0 at an appropriate distance from the outlet e. The higher rearward portion houses two stop cocks, k for cold water, 10 and w for hot Water supply, respectively, the discharges Z of which open into the hollow rearward portion at a higher level than outlet e, as indicated in the drawing by the distance h.
The manner of operation of the new device is 15 as follows:
As soon as the stop cocks w and k are opened, the Water will flow into the rearward portion b, and is then delivered to the hollow collar 0 after having previously passed conduit d, whereupon 2 a part of it will finally enter the basin at y, where the surplus water is discharged through outlet e. Before reaching these outlets the warm water streams through the collar forming the edge of the basin, and thereby heats the upper edge of 25 the basin. The main delivery into the basin or bowl through the mouth e of the conduit takes place preferably in a slanting direction; so the water can be used for body hygiene in any desired manner.
In case that a suck-back occurs due to the rupture of a pipe, or due to the fact that too great a quantity of water is taken from lower taps or because the pipe lines have been emptied for another reason, it is impossible for the quantity of 35 Water filling the basin even up to its upper edge, to be sucked back into the water supply pipelines, because air is automatically admitted through outlet 6 placed above the level of the basins upper edge. Also in case of the shell- 40 shaped rinsing mouth 9 being clogged, the water having risen within conduit d up to the level of outlet it will be prevented from entering the pipe line, because the discharges 1 Within the stop cocks k and w are placed higher by the vertical 45 distance h than the level of outlet e.
The sanitary basinaccording to the invention Without impairing in any manner whatever all possible modes of using the Water supplied, thus warrants in an ideal manner the absolute pre- 50 vention of dirty water being sucked back into the clean water supply pipe, this result being achieved without any particular safety appliances being used.
The invention is not restricted to the modifica- 66 tions as described or as shown in the drawing, but can be varied in numerous Ways Without departing from its principle.
What I claim, is:
1. Sanitary basins such as b-idets, gargling bowls and the like, comprising a body, a hollow circumferential water supply collar and an elevated hollow portion on said body, water supply fittings carried by said elevated hollow portion, the main discharge opening for the water being situated between the elevated rear portion and the circumferential collar and being arranged higher than the level of the collar-edge and extending in a slanting direction to the interior of said body, said opening serving, on one hand, as an outlet for the water which is not used for flushing or heating the hollow collar and, on the other hand, serving to admit air when a vacuum occurs in the supply pipe, thereby preventing the back flow of dirty Water.
2. A sanitary basin as claimed in claim 1 characterized in that said water supply fittings include supply cocks provided with outlets within the elevated rear portion disposed at a higher level than that of the discharge opening, the total cross section of said outlets being smaller than the cross section of said discharge opening.
