ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 24, 1926.
I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
J'QHN sonrrrnn, or NEW YORK, N. Y,
COMBINED STRAINER AND STOPPER r03. BASIN OUTLETS.
Application filed .Tune 4, 1925. Serial 1T0. 34,755. I
position in the outlet and used as a stopper or plug to retain water in the basin or utensil for washing and other purposes.
In carrying out my invention I provide a tubular body open at one end and closed at the other end and having perforations in its side walls, the open end being adapted to be placed in the outlet of a basin or the like to serve as a strainer, whereby the water may fiowcontinuously into and from the basin, such end of the device being adjustable to fit outlets of different sizes. For the last named purpose I provide the device with a longitudinal slit, whereby the open end thereof may be adj'usted to spread the same slightly to fit in an appropriate outlet, and if such end of the device is too large it may be pressed or squeezed to a smaller size to fit a smaller outlet. The opposite or closed end of the device is preferably tapered to fit outlets of varying sizes, a rubber sleeve or gasket preferably being placed around the closed end of the device to tightly fit in the outlets, serving as a plug or stopper.
My invention also comprises novel details of improvement that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein Fig. 1 is a partly sectional sideview illustrating my improved device in use as a strainer; I
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2, 2, in Fig. 1;
Fig. 8 is a side view illustrating a modi fication; and
Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the strainer of Fig. 3.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
My improved strainer and plug comprises a tubular or hollow member 1, open at one end at 2, and closed at the opposite end 3, by the end wall 3 Any suitable number through the open end.
of perforations 4 are provided in the wall of the member 1 to serve as a strainer The strainer tube is shown imperforate near opposite ends to be fitted at such ends in the outlet 5 of a basin, tub, sink or other utensil that is connected with a sewer in an ordinary way. In order to provide adjustability 0f the imperforate end portion 6 of the device'the metal thereof is slit longitudinally at 7, extending through theadjacent open end so that the metal at said end may be pressed or squeezed together to reduce the dimension, or may be expanded to increase the dimension, of such end of the device to fit outlets 5 of varying dimensions. The closed end 3 of the device is tubular and preferably tapering to fit outlets 5 of varying dimensions so that the device will act as a plug, the closure 3 at such end preventing the outflow of water from the basin or the like, although the water may enter the device through the perforations 4 therein. By preference I provide the closed end of the device with a tubular and tapering sleeve or gasket at 8, preferably of rubber, fitted snugly on such end portion of the device to fit the outlet 5 tightly when pressed the-rein. By preference the device is provided with a shoulder 9 at a suitable distance from its closed end, against which the inner end of the sleeve 8 may fit to retain the same in proper operative position at the end of the device.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the device is shown in a single piece of metal which may be drawn to shape, such as of aluminum, with an integral end wall 3*. Such device is particularly adapted for use in hair dressing establishments during the process of shampooing or otherwise cleaning womens hair and is elongated or of sufficient length with apertures extending therealong so that should hair encircle and clog the lower apertures of the device water may rise to a considerable depth in the basin and overflow through the upper apertures.
In Figs. 3 and 4 the device is shown of a less height than in Fig. 1 but having an enlarged chamber midway between its open and closed ends, as indicated at 10, such device being particularly adapted for use in the home. In accordance with Figs. 3 and 4 the chamber 10 and the closed end portion of the device are in a unit, pro vided With the sleeve 8, and the open end portion 2 is tapering and slit at 7 to fit various outlets 5, such portion being provided with a transverse wall or head 11 which may be secured to the chamber 10, such as by seaming the parts together, as indicated at 12. The shoulder 9 is located between the chamber 10 and the closed talpering end portion of the device. The device as shown in Figs. 3 and 4t is particularly adapted for use in sinks, wash tubs,
bathtubs, urinals and the like, whereby continuous flow of water may be provided through the device as a strainer or the de vice may be used as a stopper, in manner before stated.
Having now described my invention what I claim is:
1. device of the class described comprising a perforate tubular member having on'e end open to fit in an outlet and to serve as a strainer and the opposite end closed by a transverse end wall to serve as a plug to enter an outlet with the perforate portion extending upwardly above the outlet.
2. A device of the class set forth compris ing a perforate tubular member provided with an open end and having a longitudinal slit in its wall extending through said open end to permit the wall'to be expanded and contracted at the open end to fit outlets of varying dimensions, said member having a closure at its opposite end and having an imperforate portion adjacent to said end to serve as a stopper in said outlets.
A device or the class descr bed comarisin a ertorate tubular member having 3 v 0 one end open to serve as a strainer and the opposite end closed to serve as a plug, and a flexible sleeve upon the closed end of the :device, the areas of the open end and logf the sleeve'being' substantially the same to fit the same outlet.
