To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANS HEMPEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Washboilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an attachment for washboilers, and more particularly one for preventing splashing or spilling of water on the floor or stove when the clothes are placed into or removed from the boiler or tub.
The attachment comprises a removable drain device so constructed that it can be readily attached to an ordinary wash-boiler and which, when in use, catches the drip from the clothes and drains it into the tub or other vessel.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional perspective view showing another application of the invention.
Referring specifically :to the drawing, 5 denotes an ordinary wash-boiler having at its-top edge the usual bead 6. The drip attachment comprises a bottom plate 7 at the edges of which are upstanding flanges 8 which form the side walls of the attachment. The bottom plate is inclined at 9 to form a chute for conducting the drip to the tub or other vessel which will be placed under the lower end of the. chute. The width of the plate 7 is such that it projects beyond the sides of the boilers when it is attached to the end thereof, and for this reason the upper end of the projecting portion of the plate has upstanding flanges 10 to prevent the water from running off that end.
At the upper end of the plate 7, between the flanges 10 is a depending flange 11 which is adapted to enter the boiler, and by its engagement with the walls thereof prevents outward or forward movement of the attachment when in use. Adjacent the upper end of the plate 7 are catches for locking the attachment to the boiler. The catches comprise plates 12 which are pivoted as at 13 on the bottom of the plate 7. At one end of the plate 12 is a downward extension 14 which is doubled on itself at 15, and bent upwardly to form an upstanding arm 16, which is adapted to be swung under and into engagement with the bead 6.
The device herein described is readily attached to the boiler, it being necessary only to place it on the top thereof adjacent one end with the flange 11 fitting inside the boiler. The plates 12 are swung around so as to bring the arms 16 into engagement with the bead 6 which securely fastens the device to the boiler. Upon swinging the arms 16 away from the bead 6, the device can be lifted off the boiler and thus removed therefrom. The construction herein described also enables the attachment to be placed on either side of the boiler as shown in Fig. 3, and it is readily adjusted so as to fit any ordinary wash-boiler. The location of the catches is such that the arms 16 can be swung into engagement with the bead 6 in either position of the attachment. In the first position the arms 16 engage the bead 6 on opposite sides of the boiler. When the attachment is placed on the side of the boiler, the catches are given a quarter turn which brings the arms 16 closer to the flange 11, and the side wall of the boiler then fits snugly between the flange 11 and the arms 16, the latter engaging the bead 6 as before.
The attachment by reason of its simplicity of construction can be cheaply produced and effectively serves the purpose for which it is intended.
I claim An attachment for Washboilers comprising a chute having at one end 21 depending flange engageable with the wall of the boiler on the inside thereof, and a plate piovted on the bottom of the chute, and having an upstanding arm cngageable with the head at the top edge of the boiler on the outside thereof.
