ANDREW s.gammiviiffi umuwnsmxemmn c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREI/V IVEISS, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN \VASHBOARD COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
WASHBOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,570, dated March 17, 1896.
Application filed February 26,1895. Serial No. 539,736. (No model.)-
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW WE1ss,a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvementsin Washboards, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to the provision of a closed box or receptacle capable of adjustment to a position of use above either of the rubbing-faces of a doublefaced washboard, one of the sides of said receptacle being adapted to form a brand-board and the other a protector for the clothes of the operator and the soap from the splashing of Water.
The invention is more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top plan view illustrating a washboard having my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same, the plane of section being indicated by the line II II, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a washboard having my improved soap-box applied thereto, said figure showing a modification of the construction of the soap-box. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation, the plane of section being indicated by the line IV IV, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation illustrating a further modification in the construction of the soap-box and illustrating the manner of securing the same in the washboard-frame, and Fig. 6 is a detail view illustrating the manner of securing the soap-box shown in Fig. 5 in the frame.
In the practicev of my invention a board 1, which is made of such dimensions as to approximately fill the space usually occupied by the brand-board, is secured to a shaft 2, having its ends loosely mounted in the headpiece 3 and cross-bar 4, respectively, of the frame of the washboard. This board 1 forms, in connection with end pieces 5 and a side piece 6, a receptacle for the soap, said side being arranged at such an angle to the board 1 as to project upwardly and outwardly and serve as a protector, preventing the splashing of water onto the clothes of the operator and soap contained in the receptacle above described. This soap box or receptacle is made of such a size relative to the opening in the upper portion of the washboard that it can be rotated through said opening from a position of use above one of the rubbing-faces to a corresponding position above the other face.
In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4. the soap box or receptacle is formed by the brand-board and a concavoconvex piece 7, seoured to the brand-board at an angle there to and projecting a sufficient distance from the brand-board to serve as a protector. In this construction the brand-board is pivotally mounted on pins 8, projecting into the head-piece and cross-bar respectively, and provision is made for locking the soap box or receptacle in a position for use above either one of the rubbing-faces of the board by forming a groove in the upper side of the crossbar for the reception of the lower edge of the brand-board, which is yieldingly held into such groove by a spring 9, surrounding the upper pin between the head-piece and upper edge of the brand-board.
In the constructions shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the soap box or receptacle is held in operative relation to the rubbing-faces by a stop 10, (shown in Fig. 1,) attached to one of the side bars, against which the brand-board 1 will bear when the soap-box is shifted to its positions of use.
In the construction shown in Fig. 5 the soap box or receptacle is made removable from the brand-board space, so that it can be taken out from its position of use above one rubbingface and inserted in the brand-board space in proper position for use above the other face. In order to hold the soap-receptacle in proper position, the lower edge of the brand-board is extended beyond the bottom of the soapreceptacle, forming a rib 11, adapted to fit into a groove 12, formed in the upper face of the cross-bar, and the upper portion of the brand-board is provided with a turn-button 13, adapted to be turned into engagement with the groove 14, formed in the under side of the head-piece, as clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 6. I
I claim herein as my invention- 1. The combination with a double-faced Washboard, of a soap box or receptacle formed in part by the brand-board and having the portion of the box or receptacle which supports the soap adapted to operate as a protector for the soap and the clothes of the operator, the brand-board being movable and reversible, thereby permitting of the adjustment of the soap-box to a position for use as a receptacle and protector above either face of a Washboard, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a double-faced washboard, of a soap box or receptacle formed in part by the brand-board and having the portion of the box or receptacle which supports the soap adapted to operate as a protector for the soap and the clothes of the operator, the brand-board being mounted on vertically-arranged pivots, therebypermitting of the adjustment of the soap-box through the brand-board space to a position for use above either rubbing-face,substantially as set forth.
7 tector for the soap and the clothes of the operator, the brand-board being movable and reversible, thereby permitting of the adj ustwashboard to a position of use above either of the rubbing-faces, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination of a double-faced washboard, a reversible brand-board, a soap-box attached to one side of the brand-board and adapted to operate as a protector for the soap and the clothes of the operator, and a lock for holding the soap-box in a position for use above either of the rubbing-faces of the washboard, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
