SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 569,860, dated October 20, 1896. Application filed August 5, 1896. Serial No. 601,797. (No model.)

To all 1072 0121, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES F. DISCH, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Banks; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

This invention relates to an improvement in banks, and particularly to that class which are intended to be in one sense ornamental, the object of the invention being to construct a bank the opening of which is not readily accessible to the casual observer, and it consists in the construction, as hereinafter de- 2 5 scribed, and particularly recited in the claims.

The case of the bank may be of any preferred form, here shown as in the form of a book, in which the bottom A, back B, ends C, and front D are formed integral or from parts permanently united together. Projecting inward at three corners of the opening are Webs a. The forward upper edge of the back is undercut, formingalip b. The cover E corresponds substantially to the bottom A,

and is formed at its rear edge with a lip 6, adapted to pass under the lip 17 of the back, which lip 19 covers the joint between the two parts. This cover is secured in place by screws f, which are adapted to pass through holes 1.0 formed therefor in the cover into the webs a of the box, which are provided with threaded openings to receive the screws. In the face of the cover is a slot F, which is surrounded by a raised border G, of any desired design,

5 as herein shown it being in the form of an anchor. Within the border and corresponding in shape thereto is a cover H, secured at one end to the border G by a pivot h, and provided at its opposite end with a hook t',

:0 which extends downward into the case.

Mounted on a pivot J in the under side of the case is a latch I, the outer end of which is adapted to engage the hook i, and so as to hold that end of the cover in engagement with the top of the case, it being normally held in this position by a spring L. The upper end of the pivot J extends through the case, and is provided at its outer end with a head g, corresponding in design to the heads of the screws f, and so as to appear to form one of the ornamental screws by which the cover is secured. At the pivot end of the cover is a spring K, secured at one end to the under side of the case, and so that its free end will bear upon the underside of the cover H, and so as to force the cover upward when the book i is released from engagement with the latch I. When it is desired to disclose the slot F, the head 9 of the pivot I is partially rotated, which turns the latch I out of engagement with the book i of the cover H, which will, under the action of the spring K, immediately fly upward.

To close and lock the bank, it is only neces sary to depress the cover until the hooki again engages the-latch I.

By this construction an ornamental bank is secured, one in which the locking mechanism is entirely concealed, and not only is the locking mechanism concealed, but there is no indication from the outside of the case as to how the locking mechanism is operated.

As before stated, the form of the case and slot cover may be altered at pleasure, as it does not necessarily form any part of this invention.

I claim- 1. In a bank, the combination with a case and a cover adapted to be secured thereto, said cover formed with a slot and a rib in- 0 closing the same, of a slot-cover corresponding in shape to said rib, within which it is pivoted, said slot-cover formed at its free end with an inwardly-extendin g hook, a latch pivotally connected to the under side of the case-cover for engagement with said hook, and means extending upward through the case-co ve r, whereby said latch may be turned substantially as described.
