Be it known that wenrznnrn A. MEALEY and GEORGE MCC. MnALnv, citizens of the United States, residing at Chatham, in the county of Columbia and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in lVindow-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to window-cleaners; and it has for its object to `provide an improved device of this class whereby windows, and particularly windows at an elevation from the street-level, may be readily cleaned upon both the outside and inside surfaces and from the inside of the building.

The invention has for its further objects to provide an improved device of this class which will be simple and durable in construction, easy of manipulation, inexpensive in manufacture, and generallysuperiorin point of efficiency and serviceability.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of our improved window-cleaner, showing the same in use. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical sectional view of the same, taken through the mop-head. Fig. 3 is a detail transverse sectional View of the same, also taken through the mop-head.

Corresponding parts in all the figures are denoted by the same reference characters.

Referring tothe drawings, 1 designates our improved window-cleaner, which comprises a shaft or handle portion 2, provided at its upper end with a mop-head 5 and at its lower end with a grip 3 and formed beneath the grip 3, as at 4, for connection with an additional shaft or handle member when the use of the same is desired. The mop-head 5 projects laterally from the upper end of the shaft or handle 2, whereby the shaft or handle may be manipulated vertically with the mop-head in engagement with the surface of the window to clean the same. y

In the preferred form of construction the mop-head 5 consists of a frame or body por- ,tion 6, which carries the customary rubbing or cleaning device or materials 7, which may consist of textile material, chamois, bristles, or allied materials or devices. The frame or body portion G of the mop-head 5 embodies a top member or band 8, the end portions 9 of which areconnected with the upper end portion of the shaft or handle 2, as at 10, at opposite sides of the same, said upper end portion of the shaft or handle 2 being preferably squared, as at 1l, to impart the required stability of connection of the frame or body portion G of the mop-head. The central portion of the top member or band 8 of the mop-head frame is formed into avertical plate orhead 12, with which the rubbing or cleaning materials 7 are directly connected, said plate or head 12 being spaced from the upper end portion of the shaft or handle 2 laterally of the same by means of the portions of the top member of the band 8,which intervenes between the end portions 9 of the same and the plate or head 12, said intervening portions of the top member or band 8 being formed into divergent arms 13, which project laterally from the upper end portion of the shaft orhandle 2. The mop-head 5 also embodies brace members 14E, which eX- tend obliquely downwardly from the arms 13 and connect with the squared upper end portion of the shaft or handle 2, as at 15, at a point beneath the point of connection 10 of the top member or band S of the frame or body member of the mop-head. The brace members 14 maintain the top member or band Bof the frame of the mop-head in properlaterally-projecting position and prevent movement of the plate or head 12 of the top mein ber of the frame of the mop-head relative to the shaft or handle 2, lthus insuring positive ness of operation of the device and a rm frictional engagement of the rubbing or cleaning material 7 with the surface of the Window.

The rubbing or cleaning material. 7 maybe connected with the head S in any suitable and convenient manner; but said head 8 is preferably formed with a plurality of elongated openings or slits 16, forming parallel spaced bars 17, the rubbing or cleaning ma terial 7 being adapted to be threaded through the slits or openings and around the bars 17 in a manner best adapted to present the rubbing or cleaning material in position for use according to the class of work to be performed.

As illustrated, the entire frame or body portion 6 of the mop-head may be produced from a single blank of suitable metal in flat ICO or open form, the blank being then bent up r handle into the operative arrangement of parts as described and secured to the shaft or handle, as at 15 and 10.

The operation and advantages of our improved window-cleaner will be readily understood.

The device is used in the customary manner by manipulating the same byimeans of the grip 3 of the shaft or handle 2, and in long-distance work a supplemental handle may be fitted to the handle 2 by the means ofthe connection 4, which latter means permit of easy connection and disconnection of parts as governed by the class of Work to be performed. Bymoving the mop-head across the window-surface with the shaft or handle 2 in a vertical position thecleaning material 7 is brought to bear operatively upon the window, and this feature of operation permits of conveniently cleaning the outer surfaces of windows from the inside of the building in which the same are installed and obviates the awkwardness and danger attendant upon Wmdow-cleaning from an outside positlon, as upon the window-sill. The cleaning material is firmly held in position byits connection with the head l2 of the top member of the frame of the mop-head, and the operative bearingstrain of the head l2 and the cleansing material carried thereby upon the window is received by the shaft or handle 2 in effective braced relation by the top member 8 of the frame of the mop-head and the brace members 14 ofthe same.

The integral formation of the mop-head frame is conducive of inexpensiveness and facility of manufacture, and the entire device is extremely simple and inexpensive, as well as durable and proof against the effects of long-continued wear and tear.

We do not desire to be understood as limiting ourselves to the details of construction and arrangements as hereinv described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made in the features of construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention and improvements. We therefore reserve the right to all such variation and modification as properlyfall within the scope of our improvements and the terms of the following claims.

Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. An improved window-cleaner, comprising a handle portion, and a mop-head projecting laterally from the outer end portion of the same; said mop-head consisting of a frame 0r body portion comprising a top member embodying a plate or head spaced from the handle portion and brace members extending between the top member and the portion; said plateor head of the top member being adapted to receive the cleaning material in direct connection.

2. An improved window-cleaner, comprising a handle portion, and a mop-head projecting laterally from the outer end portion of the same; said mop-head consisting of an integral frameor body portion comprising a top member or band the end portions of which are directly connected Wit-h the handle portion and the central part of which is formed into a plate or headvwith which the cleaning material is directly connected, and brace members extending between the top member and the handle portion.

3. An improved window-cleaner, comprising a handle portion, and a mop-head projecting laterally from the outer end. portion of the same; said mop-head consisting of an integral frame or body portion comprising a top member or band the end portions of which are directly connected with the handle portion and the centralportion of which is formed into a slotted plate or head with which the cleaning material is directly connected, and brace members extending obliquely downwardly from the top member and connected with the handle portion beneath the point of connection of the top member.

4. In an improved window-cleaner, a handle portion, and a mop-head connected with the outer end portion of the same and consisting of an integral frame or body portion comprising a top member or band the end portions of which are connected with the handle portion and are projected from the latter to form spaced arms connected at their outer ends by a transverse plate or head with which the cleaning material is directly connected, and brace members extending between the top member and the handle portion and extending obliquely downwardly into connection with the handle portion at a point beneath the l point of connection of said arms of said top member.

5. An improved window-cleaner comprising a separable handle portion, and a mophead projecting laterally from the outer end portion of the same said mop consisting of a central portion having three parallel spaced bars adapted to receive and hold the cleaning material and side portions adapted to be bent at an angle to such central portion and oblique brace members said side portion and said members being adapted to be secured at their ends to said handle portion.
