M. MORRISON.
Mor. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 10. 1915.

MOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 10, 1915. Serial No. 7,344.
To all whom t may concern.' l
Be i-t known that I, MURRAY MORRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Athens, in the county of Henderson and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mops, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a Imop for use in scrubbing, brushing or polishing floors or other simular surfaces. 4. The invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of a mop consisting of few and simple parts in which the brush or mop portion or body can be removed to be replaced by a new brush portion or body, the entire structure furthermore being simply constructed so that it can be readily cleaned and wherein the brush portion or body will be rigidly held in a suitable frame and can, as it wears down, be advanced in the frame so that a suiiicient portion ofthe brush body will project to permit of effectively using the same.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts` in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on-tlie line 3-3 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional View taken on the line 4-4 in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the views,
I provide a substantially inverted U-shaped casing 10 preferably formed of sheet metal and providing a front 11 and a similar back 12. The edges of the casing 10 preferably have portions 13 bent upon themselves to form blunt edges or rim portions 14 as clearly shown, and the front and back 11 and 12 are formed with vertical grooves 15, with the front grooves opposed to the grooves in the back and with each groove in the front lying in the vertical plane of a corresponding or opposed groove in the back. The
brush body 16 preferably consists of a number of individual strands 17 of hemp'or liber which. inserted in the casing 10, are so arrangedthat each strand will lie in a groove of the front and a groove of the back,
squared shanks 20 passing through thesq'uared `apertures in the front to prevent rotatlon of the bolts. The bolts project from the back after passing therethrough and are adapted to receive thumb nuts 22 which,
when tightened up on washers 23 carried by the bolts, said washers adapted to bear against the back, will tend to press the front 'and back toward each other, thus clamping the inner ends of the strands forming the brush body in the casing. A suitable socket 24 for a handle 25 is secured to the medial portion'of the casing,l in any convenient manner, thehandle being preferably inclined rearwardly from the casing t0 permit of the convenient use of the mop.
It will be clearly seen that when the free ends of the brush body wearA down, the brush body can be slightly advanced out of the casing to insure sufficient surface of brush body whereby the brush will be .effective as a mop or for cleaning floors or surfaces, and it will be further seen that by simply loosening the thumb nuts 22 on the bolts, the front and back of the casing spreading apart due to the spring-like action of the material from which the casing is made, will permit of readily removing the brush body either in its individual strands'or as a unit and replacing the same by a new brush body.
From the'foregoing description it will be clearly seen that the structure described is of a simple construction, consists of a few parts which cannot readily get out of order- Patented iuay e, raie.'
