Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 3, 1917.
Application filed November 7, 1916. Serial No. 130,030.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID L. SADLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Booneville, in the county of Prentiss and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brushes.
The object of the invention is to provide means for the attachment of a number of brushes of various kinds to a common holder, the said means consisting of bolts passing through one of the brushes and through brackets secured to the other brushes to permit their attachment to the holder, which in the present instance is in the form of a reservoir.
With the above objects in view the invention consists of the novel combination and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawings and described in the folv lowing specification.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an end view showing all of the brushes in position and a portion of the handle;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view showing the rubbing brush attached to the holder, the other brushes being removed;
Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the mop attached; 1
Fig. 5 is a similar view with the sweeping brush attached;
Fig. 6 is a bottom view of the holder showing the valve for the reservoir, with the springs of the said value in dotted lines;
Fig. is a detail perspective view of the mop detached from the holder illustrating the attaching brackets carried bythe said mop; and
Fig. 8 is a similar brush and brackets.
In the practical form of the invention, the same consists of a common holder designated by the numeral 1. Thisholder is preferably in the form of a reservoir, and consists of awooden back 2 having therein a threaded opening 3 for the attachment of the handle 4. Secured'to the block 2 is a view of the sweeping ,metal casing 5 provided upon its forward edge with an opening 6, the said opening being formed between the edge of the easing and the inclined wall of the block 2. Communicating with this opening is the the loops to permit the rubber reservoir 7 which may contain water, for the purpose of scrubbing or may contain oil to be used in connection with the mop. The opening 6 isyieldingly closed by means of a valve, consisting of a strip of rubber 8 and being held against the opening by the springs 9. A rod 10 is passed through the loops formed in one end of the springs, while the opposite ends of the springs are attached to the top of the reservoir. An upturned end 11 is provided upon the rod for the purpose or removing the rod from strip to be removed for the purpose of cleaning the reservoir. Along its edge, the opening is provided with an inturned flange which, together with the rubber strip. prevents the contents of the reservoir from leaking out after its removal from the floor. The rubber strip and flange just described form practically a valve and seat, and permit the contents of the reservoir to be fed to the brush in the required quantities.
Secured to the under side of the reservoir or holder is a scrubbing brush 13, the back of which is provided with openings 14 for the reception of the securing bolts 15. Openings 16 are formed in the block 2 in order that the bolts 15 may be passed therethrough for the purpose of securing thef scrubbing brush in position.
A mop 17 secured to the back 18 is provided with holes 19 adapted to register with the holes in the scrubbing brush and block so that the bolts 15 may be used for securing the mop in place. The back of the mop has secured thereto a pair of brackets 19, which are provided with open slots 20 adapted to take over the bolts 15 to aid in holding the mop in place.
A sweeping brush 21 has secured to its back by means of bolts 22 and wing nuts 23 a pair of brackets 24. These brackets are bent as at 25 so as to accommodate the reservoir, the ends of the brackets also having open ended slots 26 for the reception of the bolts 15. Wing nuts 27 are provided for securely holding the brushes upon the holder.
By referring to Fig. 1 it will be seen that the holder is suitable for carrying all of the different brushes at one time, and by referring to Figs. 3, 4: and 5 it will be seen that any one of the different brushes may be carried by the said holder.
' The rubber strip 8 is designed to extend slightly beyond the reservoir and by reversing the holderand drawing it toward you the Water on the floor Will be taken up into the reservoir.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection With the accompanying drawings, it Will be seen that the invention provides a eonvenient means for the attachment of a number of different brushes to a common holder, permitting them to be readily interchange Y -Having thus described my invention, I claim:
The combination with a reservoir having securing bolts at each end thereof, of a brush provided at each end with right angular brackets adapted to embrace the ends of the reservoir and havin open ended slots therein for engagement With the securing bolts, for the purpose of remomably securing said brush to the reservoir.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
DAVID L. SADLER.
