BRUSH-HOLDER.

Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. CocHRUN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Westerville, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Brush-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the improvement of brush-holders, and has particular relation to the means of connecting with the body of a brush a suitable form of handle.

The objects of my invention are to provide an improved brush and handle connection of superior construction and arrangement of parts, to provide improved means for supporting the brush at different angles with the handle thereto, and to produce other improvements in details of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be more plainly pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a brush, showing my improved handle connection. Fig. 2 is an end View of the same, showing the handle thrown to a different angle; and Fig. 3 is a central sectional view of the connecting-block.

Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

In carrying out my invention I employ a brush-body clamp which is in the form of a channel-plate, (indicated at 1.) This channel-plate has the lower portion of its side walls extended outwardly and channeled, as indicated at 2, said outwardly-extendin g portions being adapted to clamp or engage with the sides of a brush back 3. Extending through and connecting the upper portions of the clamping-plate side walls above the brush-back are transverse bolts 4, the latter being provided with nuts 5 on their outer ends, which by being tightened or turned inwardly operate to produce a firm clamping engagement of the clamping-plate with the sides of the brush-back.

Upon the upper face of the clamping-plate is pivoted a handle-connecting block 6, the latter being rotatably connected with the clamping plate through the medium of a pivot-bolt 7, the lower end of which on the under side of the clamping plate is provided with a nut 8. WVithin the block 6 I preferably provide a central recess 9, through which said pivot-bolt 7 extends, and within this recess, between the head of the bolt and the inner end of the recess, I provide a suitable spring 10, which serves to normally hold the block 6 in a desirable frictional engagement with the clamping-plate 1. On the under side of the forward portion of the block 6 I form a transverse groove or recess 11, the outer ends of which communicate with oppositely-located and rearwardly and upwardly inclined block side grooves 12. 13 represents a brush-handle or lower portion thereof, the latter having connected therewith at opposite points the end portions of the parallel arms of a wire bail or yoke 14. The transverse outer end portion of the bail 14 is, as shown in the drawings, fulcrumed or made to bear within the transverse recess 11 of the block 6, while the parallel arms of said bail are adapted to spring into and detachably engage with the inclined side grooves 12, the parts being shown in this position in Fig. 1.

It is obvious that when the bail is in the position lastdescribed namely, with its side arms engaged with the side recesses of the blocka substantially rigid connection is formed between the handle and the brush, the handle being thus supported at a convenient angle from said brush. In case it is desired to operate the brush sidewise or so change the position of the handle with relation of said brush as to throw the same at right angles with the position shown in Fig. lit is obvious that thismay be accomplished by imparting a partial rotation to the block 6. Owing to the employment of the spring 10 it will be seen that such frictional contact of the block 6 and the clamping-plate may be produced as to prevent a too free rotary movement of the block during the use of the block. When desired, it is obvious that the yokearms may be disengaged from the side grooves of the block and the handle thrown to the opposite side in the manner indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. In this latter position it is obvious that a substantially free or loose con nection of the handle with the block is provided.

Although the block 6 herein shown is pr0= vided with an inclined base or is of a substantially half-clutch form, it is obvious that said block may be produced in any desirable form without altering the character of my invention. It is also evident that the side walls of the clamping-plate may be shaped to engage with any desired form of brush-back.

From the construction and operation herein described it will be seen that simple, reliable, and eifective means are provided for connecting a brush and handle and that the handle may be adjusted to projectin difierent directions from said brush.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a brush-holding device the combination with a clamping-plate adapted to detachably engage opposite sides of a brush-back, of a handle-connecting block secured upon said clam ping-plate,said block having a transverse recess 11 in its underside and inclined side grooves, of a handle 13 and a bail or yoke extending from said handle and fulcrumed in said recess 11, the arms of said bail adapted to be sprung into and out of said side grooves, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In a brush-holding device, the combination with a clamping-plate adapted to detachably engage with opposite sides of a brushback, of a handle-connecting block rotatably connected with said clampingplate, said block having oppositely-located inclined side grooves 12, of a handle 13, a bail or yoke extending therefrom and fulcrumed in said block, the side arms of said yoke or bail adapted to be sprung into and out of said side grooves, substantiallyas and for the purpose specified.

3. In a brush-support, the combination with a clamping-plate adapted to be detachably engaged with a brush-back, of a handleconnecting block, a pivot-bolt rotatably uniting the latter with said clamping-plate, a recess 9 in said block and a spring within said recess adapted to retain said block in frictional contact with said clamping-plate, a handle 13 and a yoke extending therefrom, said yoke havingafulcrumed connection with said block, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

4. In abrush-support,the combination with a clamping-plate having outwardly-projecting side-Wall portions adapted to engage the sides of a brush-back and transverse bolts 4 adjustably connecting said clamping-plate side walls above the brush-back, of a handleconnecting block secured upon said clamping-plate and a handle fnlcrumed thereto, substantiallyas and for the purpose specified.
